Make use, I implore you, of that particular privilege accorded to you of bringing visible and speedy help where help is almost despaired of. Come to my assistance in this great need, that I may receive the consolations and succor of heaven in all my necessities, tribulations and sufferings, in particular (Monica4316), and that I may bless God with you and all the elect throughout eternity. The verse in the Lord’s Prayer, MT T6:13 which is generally translated as “And lead us not into temptation” has recently been retranslated by the church to, “And put us not to the test.”
The significance of this is because the traditional translation implies that God might lead us into temptation; however, it is not possible for God to do this. I think that John (perhaps) best explains this when he wrote that God is light.
God knows that we will have spiritual crisis’ which are, to one degree or another, a level of testing our faith such as when Abraham lifted the knife to kill his son Isaac; however, God never intended for Abraham to kill Isaac. The entire purpose of Abraham’s test was for him to realize and apprehend how deep his faith in God was. The ultimate test in the Bible is when Jesus willingly went to the cross based on his faith in our Father.
The meaning of all this is that in the Lord’s prayer we ask that our faith not be put to the test because it can mean, for some, a deep spiritual crisis with the ultimate purpose of making it through the test of faith so that we – in the end – come out of it as stronger Christians.
To describe this meaning in a more tangible way I’ll explain by using the example of what the US Army calls “Confidence Courses” which are training exercises for where, when and how soldiers have to carry 110 Lb. backpacks (aka “Humping the Alice”) is the phrase US soldiers use to describe the extraordinarily difficult (simulated) battle training courses they go through which can last from days to weeks or even months. These courses put a soldier’s endurance to the extreme limits of what they are capable of accomplishing under the most difficult circumstances of terrain and weather.
It was because of these courses that I knew what I was capable of before being sent to Vietnam so that I would be physically and mentally prepared for the reality of battle. Although, at the outbreak of my first fight I was so terrified that I froze – and if a sergeant hadn’t pushed me forward while pointing to our “little brown brothers” – I wouldn’t be able to write this reply. (So I have my own demons to deal with.) Also, this experience, and others like it taught me how to function amidst chaos.
When we have a crisis of faith it is similar to when I froze except that God will give us the push we need when we are open to accepting it, also, God knows and understands that life will push all of us to different tests.
After two tours in SE Asia (3 years) I came home with a crisis of faith that lasted for decades until an incident of life forced me to go to my knees seeking God’s help. Because of this I went into the Sierra Nevada Mountains in late winter to climb some of its snow covered mountains in search of God. After several days in below freezing temperatures I decided to give it up as a failure and drove to the relatively warmer climate in the Mojave Wilderness Preserve where I climbed the plateau Table Mountain for the fun of it. When I was on top of the plateau with a beautiful view-scape my soul was completely open and this enabled me to hear God’s “words” for me.
This is further explained by another verse which long confused me.
Finally, one clue I use when asking myself if something is God’s will is based on how opposed I am to following it – because I am still a self-centered person and would rather do things my way. It has been about 25 years since I climbed Table Mountain and I have become better at making straight the path of the Lord although I often fall short. This is why John wrote:

I didn’t understand why the Almighty needed me to make straight any paths because He had the omnipotence to straighten His own paths. After much prayer and contemplation I came to understand that I was the one who made the Lord’s path crooked because of all the obstacles I placed in His way that were based on my expectations of who and what God was supposed to be. Therefore, when I was on top of Table Mountain, I had no expectations, God knew that I was looking for Him and my open heart on that day made it possible for God to reach me for the first time. Since then the Holy Spirit has spoken to me many times and, like in the army, I’ve better learned how to recognize and function in the midst of the Holy Spirit and understand what I need to do.Mark 1:3 “Prepare you the way of the Lord, make his paths straight.”

I would like to address the English word sin because the Greek manuscripts don’t have any concept of our modern comprehension of the word i.e. a sinfully delicious chocolate cake… (My 10 volume Greek “Theological Dictionary of the New Testament” exhaustively covers this subject over 16 pages of fine print.) First the word “sin” comes down to us from a Middle Ages English archery term for shooting an arrow and missing the mark – that word is sin. The closest the Greek comes to this is (their root word) hamartia which essentially means the same thing.
There are about five variations of hamartia which I won’t go into but they describe different kinds and levels of falling short of God’s will for us. Additionally the Greek has various words for other types of falling short which parallel our words such as venial and mortal sins. There are words for moral shortcomings as well as acts of omission or commission and all of this exemplifies why priests (and pastors, ministers, preachers et al) are so important to our faith. Without these people we would be left to admit our sins to ourselves only – and this is a far easier thing to do than to openly confess them to another person – which is why confession is so critical to our faith. We all need a guide in life and particularly someone to help us understand the Bible.
Because I’m a disabled veteran I’ve had decades to read and re-read the Bible, spend time in prayer and studying tomes about it which has enabled me to (perhaps) have a somewhat better understanding of the Bible than do those with differently full lives.
I would like to finish by stating that I make no claims to being any better or worse than anyone else.
