Going To A Solemn High Mass Tonight...Help Please

I am going to a Solemn High Mass tonight in honor of the 50th anniversary of a local parish. What are some things I need to do to prepare? What can I expect? I don’t have a mantilla, but I have a black wide bandana headband that covers the top of my head (would that work?) What should I wear? What happens if I get lost during mass? lol I’m stressing out 😛

I’m not sure if all Solemn High Masses are Tridentine Masses, but assuming they are:

If you have time, check out this mass:

Solemn High Mass

Just do what everyone else does, and if you know nothing else, you’ll quickly figure out where to say “et cum spiritu tuo” and “Amen.

Whenever the priest says “Dominus vobiscum”, you respond “et cum spiritu tuo”.
Say those loud and proud. LOL.

Also, if the church has a bookstore, you might want to see if they carry those little red missalette books that has both the latin and English order of the mass.

My friend, “et tu spiritu tuo” literally means “and you your spirit”; you meant “et cum spiritu tuo”, literally “and with your spirit”.

O.P., all you really have to do is pray and follow what the rest of the congregation does. Remember that no matter how little you understand, our Almighty Father is watching over you specifically. During the Mass, eternity is opened and the veil which conceals ever-present Heaven is cast aside. We are living in the shadow of the angels every second of the day, but we only realise the immense gravity of God’s presence and Heaven’s glory during the Mass.

It doesn’t matter which Mass it is or what you know… all you have to know is that our Lord Jesus Christ is there for you to worship with all your being.

You don’t have to worry about wearing a head covering - at least not at our parish, and I assume (and hope to be corrected if I’m wrong) that you wouldn’t have to worry about it at the parish you’re attending, either.

Our parish hands out a small booklet containing the order of Mass, with Latin on the left-hand side and English on the right. It was relatively easy for me to follow along because I was a cantor and had to be ready to chant parts of the Mass at appropriate times, but I find it a bit more challenging (though not impossible) to follow along when I’m not chanting.

I think you’re more likely to see head coverings at a traditional mass, but it is not necessary. At one parish I attend, about 70% of the women wear the veil, but there are those who don’t. I haven’t worn a mantilla and no one looks at me askance.

You’re right - but even at our traditional Mass (celebrated on Saturday evenings at 6:00 PM every week), about half or less of the women wear head coverings (but I could be wrong - it’s hard to tell from where I typically sit when serving as a cantor).
 
just relax and remember to pray.

I think you’ll find the most confusing part is when to stand sit and kneel, just keep ALERT, “normally” and I say this because that’s how they do it in my hometown, they will have priests/seminarians/lay men in choir so the congregation will know what they’re supposed to do, so if they’re there, copy them. If they’re not there copy the altar boys.

yes, your bandanna will work fine, considering that it isn’t “loud”.

The mass will be beautiful with plenty to look/hear/smell, soak it all in and just remember to pray, you’ll enjoy it I’m sure, just don’t stress yourself out or expect too much of yourself. Enjoy!

Just and add: If your bandanna is too loud - Pin a doily on your head.

Lot’s of info to prepare for your first TLM. Don’t expect to follow along with a missal your first time. Just take it all in and know you are blessed to have the privilege 🙂

It was the most beautiful thing I have ever experienced. 😃 It truely was heaven on earth. It was also awesome to kneel at the altar rail to receive communion. I definitely want to experience it again.😃
