My friends invited me to swim at a water park soon, and the thing is that one of the friends is a girl, and two are guys. I’m wondering if there’s anything wrong with going, since guys will be there…?

Why do you think there is something wrong with this? Did you mom say you can’t go or something? Is there a specific reason that leads you to believe this is a problem? For example, is your suit immodest? Are the guys boorish in their behavior? Are you planning on doing something immoral when you get there? It should be obvious that there is nothing intrinsically wrong with going to a public water park with friends, regardless of their gender. I don’t understand what you are concerned about.

Oh… 😊

Haha, I wasn’t expecting that answer. Well, thanks for your (name removed by moderator)ut.

Maybe I’m afraid of just that.

There’s nothing wrong with having good clean fun with your friends! 🙂 But you should have a modest swimsuit!

I hope it’ll all go well. You know how sometimes boys can be a little immature (girls too )

Yeah, I’m planning on wearing my one piece, with some extra swimming shorts over it and over THAT a T-shirt. So, I think that’s pretty good.

Thanks guys.

If you were planning on wearing that anyway, that’s cool, I do the same thing. But just a reminder, bikinis aren’t immodest at a water park and you don’t have to cover up if you don’t want to. Have fun at the water park, sounds like fun.

Well, I would argue that bikinis are always immodest, no matter where one wears them, as they reveal so much of a woman’s body that it can sometimes lead some men into sin, and tempt them towards lusting after a woman. Some men choose to yield to lust, although others are able to love and see women as human beings rather than objects. It’s just a better idea to help our brothers in Christ maintain pure thoughts, and not be tempted into lust. Personally, I have worn bikinis in the past, because frankly its just easier than trying to find a cute and comfortable tankini or one-piece, and I figured that it really wasn’t such a big deal because men today are so used to seeing women’s bodies that way already. But I rethought my policy with bikinis when I read Theology of the Body for Her by Jason Evert, a beautiful book that talks about the beauty and dignity of women and their bodies, and how women’s bodies are a representation of heaven on earth and how we should treat them and protect them as such. Here’s a great Catholic article on bikini wearing! lifeteen.com/bikini-battle-sexy-vs-beautiful/

Anyway, KelseyBelsey, here is a website with some super cute, modest swimwear! It’s a swimwear buisness that a Catholic woman (Jessica Rey, she is also an actress) started when she got tired of baring all in a bikini and of having such a difficult time finding modest swimwear that was also cute! reyswimear.3dcartstores.com/

And I agree that there is no harm whatsoever in going to a waterpark with boys! Just remember to maintain your dignity and respect, and they in turn will respect you! 🙂 Have fun!

Pope John Paul II - Love and Responsibility:

“When a person uses such a form of dress in accordance with its objective function we cannot claim to see anything immodest in it, even if it involves partial nudity. Whereas the use of such a costume outside its proper context is immodest, and is inevitably felt to be so. For example, there is nothing immodest about the use of a bathing costume at a bathing place, but to wear it in the street or while out for a walk is contrary to the dictates of modesty.”

I hope you have a good time! Water Parks are a BLAST! 👍

Dear JadeHand,

Cordial greetings and a very warm welcome to the world of CAF. Jolly good post and bang on target, if I may say.

Since swimwear is not exempt from moral considerations, questions respecting modest attire continue to be extremely relevant. Women need to ask, therefore, if their choice of swimwear is more unduly revealing than it ought to be for its particular function. Of course one must needs have a reduction in the amount of clothing that one wears for bathing, but for a woman to be scantily clad in a bikini is tantamount to wearing her undergarments in public. It unacceptable and manifestly indecent for a Catholic woman professing religion to don such a provocative garment, since it clearly transgresses the boundaries of propriety. Moreover, men do not cease to be immune from concupiscence just because they are at the beach, so women still need to be considerate, even if men are responsible as well for the custody of their eyes.

God bless you for having the courage to rethink this issue and I pray earnestly that other women/girls will follow your good example, Jade. A jolly good start would be to read that Jason Evert book, I think.

Warmest good wishes,

Debora, this is an interesting quote…never have come across this before. Who interprets this though? So if one wears a smimsuit that shows partial nudity, like a bikini, it could be acceptable at a beach, but not out on the street? This leaves me with more questions than answers.

I’m not sure why that doesn’t make any sense?

Of course what you wear to the beach is not going to be the same as what you wear out to a grocery store.

…Same as what you wear out for a jog in the park is not going to be the same as what you wear to Church.

Wearing clothing that is appropriate to the occasion is key.

Dear Friend,

Cordial greetings and a very good day. Jolly good point.

This is why swimwear can never be exempt from moral considerations, dear friend, and so if a bathing costume transgresses the boundaries of propriety, then it is indecent. Since a bikini is effectively like wearing your underclothes in public, it is clearly an obvious example of immodest attire and is unbecoming of a woman who professes the religion of Christ.

Moreover, just because such a provocative garment is worn at a beach setting makes no difference whatsoever, for the men present on the beach do not cease to be immune from impure thoughts. Concupisence, my dear friend, is a problem whether the setting is the high street or the beach and whilst men are responsible for the custody of their eyes, women also have a responsibility as well to be considerate in their dress, so as not to be the occasion of temptation in others.

God bless.

I disagree with you on this. I am not even arguing about bikinis being immodest in absolute. I simply say that they are a bad idea in a water park, anyone with some common sense would figure out the the probability of technical accidents to swimwear goes up very fast when using the venues of a water park. Why should a girl put herself in a possible embarrassing position?

What do you think is the objective function of a swimsuit? Is the amount of flesh exposure provided by bikinis necessary to obtain the objective functionality?

At a nudist church service, it migh be objectionable to wear much at all. at midnight mass at a cathedral… Well, it should be obvious. Clothing should fit its use, and be appropriate to the social context.

At a water park, the wearing of something highly revealing, on a man or a woman, is flirtation. Since this is not the goal, then something modest and comfortable, which is lightweight and dries quickly. Synthetic fabrics have made meeting all these requirements easy.

As has been pointed out, anything skimpy could result in a “wardrobe malfunction”. Embarrassing for any modest woman, and her male companions, unless they are such good friends or family that it doesn’t matter. That is obviously not the case here.

Have fun.

I’ve lived around the beach all my life and I’ve mainly worn bikinis. I’ve owned a couple one pieces here and there when I was little, and I can honestly say I find bikinis a lot more comfortable and more practical… for various reasons. It’s a matter of personal preference.

Though if I had to take a guess, I’d say the vast majority of women agree with me on this, considering the only people who I ever see wearing one pieces at the beach now a days are older women or heavier women. Bikinis seem to be the favorite among the vast majority of women.

I agree with what you say and I can bet that most of men rather look at young and slimmer women in bikinis instead of older and heavier women in one piece suits, and probably some also lust after them too. However, you did not answer the question on the objective functionality, that was the main point from JPII statement after all.

Depends upon the swimming function or event. Bikinis would be a disadvantage at a competitive swim meet for example. I have to agree with Cristiano, there always seems to be a wardrobe malfunction with girls wearing bikinis at the waterparks when we’ve gone. Especially with the teens that may not be so experienced with buying a bikini that actually has the proper fit.

I don’t think the part about wearing a bikini is what jumped out at me in the OP’s comments, its that she’s concerned with the reaction of the boys being immature. Perhaps another way of looking at the situation is perhaps the people going are not the best people to hang around with and has nothing to do with what the OP wears or doesn’t wear.

Yes I did, but I will reiterate if you would like:

Having worn both bikinis AND one pieces, I DO find bikinis more comfortable/practical. Therefore more functional to ME. It’s personal preference.

This may be true…
