Haha, thanks everyone. This turned into a bikini conversation. šŸ˜›

I probably won’t be going to the water park in the end, but thanks for your help and all! 😃
Anyway, KelseyBelsey, here is a website with some super cute, modest swimwear! It’s a swimwear buisness that a Catholic woman (Jessica Rey, she is also an actress) started when she got tired of baring all in a bikini and of having such a difficult time finding modest swimwear that was also cute! reyswimear.3dcartstores.com/
Wow, what a wonderful website. Thank you!

I’ve lived around the beach all my life and I’ve mainly worn bikinis. I’ve owned a couple one pieces here and there when I was little, and I can honestly say I find bikinis a lot more comfortable and more practical… for various reasons. It’s a matter of personal preference.

Though if I had to take a guess, I’d say the vast majority of women agree with me on this, considering the only people who I ever see wearing one pieces at the beach now a days are older women or heavier women. Bikinis seem to be the favorite among the vast majority of women.
I think it’s important to note that bikinis and one pieces are not the only options out there… tankinis are a great alternative to both bikinis and one pieces. I can assure you I wouldn’t be caught dead in a one piece; I think they are extremely uncomfortable and unflattering. However, sometimes with clothing we have to sacrifice personal preference and practical functionality for the sake of modesty. Women should be trying to the best of our ability to have no part in leading men into sin by giving them no cause to lust after us, and to see our bodies as beautiful and holy representations of God and Heaven (which is why we should try to make them look as good as possible and dress them up, but also reverently protect them), rather than mere objects of beauty.

I think that JPII quote was an excellent one, but I don’t believe that he was giving women leave to wear bikinis and show just as much as what is revealed when we wear underwear, which only our husbands should see. I think he was reassuring women who were overly concerned with how much they revealed in even modest swimwear that it is okay to show more at the beach and pool than they would in other public places. But just because they can show more doesn’t mean they can show nearly all.

And I think as faithful Catholics we all know and have personally experienced that what the ā€˜vast majority’ does and have decided is acceptable is quite often morally wrong, and should be unacceptable.

Haha, yes it has become quite the bikini debate. That’s too bad you wont be going to the waterpark though 😦

And no problem! Yeah I love that website, I’ve ordered the suit ā€œJoā€! Very excited šŸ™‚

Yes I did, but I will reiterate if you would like:

Having worn both bikinis AND one pieces, I DO find bikinis more comfortable/practical. Therefore more functional to ME. It’s personal preference.
I was referring to JPII comment about objective functionality. You are giving me a subjective explanation. I do not object to your subjective take, I am simply saying that it is not related to the original quote.

Well we are all certainly entitled to our own opinions. Tankinis are definitely an option for other women out there who also find one pieces very uncomfortable, but who don’t like bikinis. I had a tankini at one point but it didn’t work out too well for me either. Left some crazy tan lines. To each their own.

Well then I guess I am not sure what you mean, or what you would consider an ā€œobjective functionality.ā€

I swim daily, and I wear a speedo type suit. It is more practical for long distance swimming. Ironically, competition swimwear for women is less revealing than ordinary beachwear, while for men it is the converse.

I’m curious what people think about the attire of competitive swimmers? How about olympic divers in skimpy speedos?

Most of my countrymen wear a simple T-shirt or sleeveless top and a pair of shorts (not denim) to the water park or beach (especially during summer time); if they have their own swimsuits, they wear them underneath.

In my case, I would be wearing my swimming trunks (the boxer shorts type) under my boardshorts as a layer of protection against sand and bugs (especially those that float in the pool).

If I organize a beach/resort outing with my friends I recommend for the ladies that they wear a sports-type swimsuit or a tankini. They may optionally wear a rash guard and boardshorts over their swimsuits. For the men they must wear boardshorts (no jerseys allowed) and, optionally, a rash guard.

I’m sure there’s enough people in the world to complain about anything and everything.

My husband was a swimmer in high school and college and they had to wear the speedos for competitions.

To be honest, I don’t have any problems with any clothes or lack of clothes. Sexual attraction is not about what a person is wearing. This talk about lust from a bikini sounds like a tendency to prurience which is the problem of the other party. How could it be any otherwise? The logical conclusion of going the modesty route heads right down the road of blaming the rape victim of wearing a red dress.

I agree.

A bikini is not as exciting to a boy on the beach as it would be in a dormitory room or even the aisles of Wal-Mart.
It’s the situation that matters and whether or not what you’re wearing is appropriate to a location.

By the way, bare stomachs are not exciting.

The only time bikini’s are acceptable is when a bunch of women are swimming in the privacy of there own home.

Bikini’s are NEVER acceptable in public, even at a water park, especially for a Catholic women. Jason Evert talks about it here: youtube.com/watch?v=WtzIcz7MOkc

To think anything otherwise is quite selfish, as regardless of the situation, a bikini WILL cause men to lust, and this is wrong.

I’m sorry, but this is just something I’m passionate about.

ā€œThe occasionā€ doesn’t matter, bikinis are immodest if worn in public.

Debora, you always have such great insight on the posts on CAF’s, but I don’t think it’s opinion whatsoever.

Same logic applied to everyday life. Women might find strapless tank tops and spaghetti strap tanks more comfortable then the rest, does that make it okay to wear in public? no.

Surely women think short shorts are more comfortable to wear on a warm day, then say some knee length bermuda shorts. Does that make those short shorts ok? no…

How about those tight spandex shorts, those are the most comfy I assume, but most definitely is it not ok.

You mentioned it’s a personal preference and more conformable ā€œTO MEā€ however, modesty is not about oneself, but rather about others. Nobody lusts after there own bodies(I hope not), so yes, your intentions might be pure(which I am sure for you Debora), but pure intentions don’t = pure actions.

And just a thought, I personally don’t take my shirt off at a beach, I mean maybe I would for a few minutes, but I prefer to hang out in a tank top. But we do live in a society where women are objectified, and that’s why it’s different for them. No double standards, The bible even backs that one up, ā€œWhoever looks at a WOMEN with lustā€¦ā€

I live in Florida, all I ever wear is spaghetti tanks and shorts (that are shorter than knee length). As for spandex shorts, I wear them sometimes when I go running during the summer. I don’t find these clothes immodest at all for outdoor wear, just as I don’t find most bikinis immodest at all for beach/pool wear.

I do appreciate you presenting your opposing opinion in a charitable manner, so thank you for that. šŸ‘

I have no problem with women wearing bikinis…it is, after all, my mind to control.

However, I wonder about the way people think…because…

I like my 2 glasses of wine a night…and there are those who say if I have an alcoholic over I shouldn’t drink…but why? It’s their mind to control, not mine.

I certainly think this is a question with no easy answers…I genuinely try not to lust…and with so many women wearing them, I honestly don’t notice the most of them. Especially in a beach setting where it’s expected (and honestly, with 4 kids, I really don’t have time to spend looking at anyone else since I really am so busy with them I just don’t).

But, for those on BOTH sides of this debate…consider it not a bikini…but a drink…and the other person is an alcoholic…and then see how you think…

Let’s compare apples to apples:

If I have a recovering alcoholic coming to have dinner with me at a restaurant, I will not drink. If I have a recovering sex addict coming to my beach house (if I had one) I would jump in the water fully clothed.

Now, does this mean that I should NEVER drink at a restaurant because there might be a recovering alcoholic sitting a few tables away from me? Absolutely not.

Likewise, I will not go to the beach and jump in the ocean fully clothed complete in knee length shorts and a baggy t-shirt because there might be a recovering sex addict walking near by.

Debora, did you watch that video I put in my first post. I highly advise you to watch that, Jason Evert is a man who knows his stuff.

I live in San Diego, so we can relate when it comes to nice weather and beaches. But I earnestly plead for you to watch that video and get an idea of what goes on in a man’s mind.

It’s not a matter of ā€œifā€ the guy will lust at you, it’s a matter of when.

Think about this… If you were going to the beach with your youth group, or many members of your church community, would you wear a bikini?

WWM(ary)D… Sorry if I sound extreme, but that’s Catholocism.

Tell me please, what’s the difference between bikini’s and underwear. Honestly.

Of course I would. And I have.

I have watched the video. My views remain the same. Thanks for the genuine concern though.

Let us represent the results of the study accurately. Not all men are the same, for one, so there is no ā€œman’s mindā€ here. National Geographic, in its reporting on the study, even uses the qualifier ā€œsomeā€ when referring to ā€œmen.ā€

Second, not every man is going to lust at a woman in a bikini, making your statement that such lust is inevitable as offensive as it is incorrect.
