I go to Confession about every 1 - 2 weeks , but I don’t like going to my own parish, since I know the priests and their confession room isn’t the most private -

So I go to other Parishes nearby ( all Catholic) and I do my confession there - am I the only person that does this?

I just enjoy the privacy , and the other parishes have a more convenient reconciliation schedule than my own parish

Is this in anyway bad…?

Not bad at all…I do it as well! I actually have a spiritual director I regularly confess to, as well as go between three different parishes for confession depending on my schedule and need for the sacrament.

There’s nothing at all wrong with going to a different parish for Confession. Our priest only offers it once a month, or by appointment. If I only sinned once per month or by appointment, this would be great, but it doesn’t always fit into my schedule. As a result, I go to three other nearby parishes depending on the circumstances. There are things I like about each of the parishes and priests, so I simply go with whatever’s most convenient.

Bad? No, it’s all very good to come to Jesus in the Sacrament, of course, even if it’s before a priest whom you do not know. If you ever have doubts about the appropriateness of confessing elsewhere then you can always make a quick mention to your regular priest that you are confessing at another parish. I have to wonder what’s not so private at your regular parish; other people can peer inside and see who is being absolved of their sins?

yes the way the have the set up for the priest and the confessor , its not the best method of privacy, and the curtain is almost see through - the ones at the Parishes I go to have lights outside the door to let you know when to come in, and its very nice, private and I just prefer it that way I guess…

but im sure glad to know im not the only one 😃

I go to 4 different parishes, depending on their schedules and my needs.

I do that too(mainly because my church has confession in the open at tables rather than a booth).

This is not bad in and of itself. In times past, there were priests who were specifically Confessors, and their sole duty was to hear Confession and offer Penance. If you are travelling then using another parish is most welcome. Just be careful when you’re in another country, not all priests speak English!

I would bring up this issue to your priest. But I would also bring up a solution. Could someone build a private Confessional? This would be a terrific carpenter’s or even an Eagle Scout project. Or does one need to be commissioned to be built? If you can’t approach your priest about this, then who will? Surely you’re not the only one who feels this way. By taking action to revise the privacy of the Sacrament, you may make it easier for others to go to him.

Two of the parishes I go to for Confession have little rooms instead of actual confessionals. They have screens set up for people who want to confess anonymously, but you have to walk past the priest to some degree to get behind the screen. I do face to face so it doesn’t bother me, but I still find it odd that both churches have the same not-so-anonymous setup.

No, not at all. The church I prefer to go to most for Mass, their Confession schedule and work schedule don’t match up at all. I was able to go to Confession in a different town and church as it was at a different time. I had arrived early to church as I was in an area not overly familiar to me and I was waiting in the lobby. The visiting priest asked me if I was waiting to go to Confession, I said I was not planning on going but since you offered and its been some time since my last time (3 months), I will go in and confess since I have the chance. The priest did not know me, and it made Confession easy on me, then again I go to a variety of priests to confess anyways for reasons above.

I think the important thing that you may want to focus on more than location is having a regular confessor, and going frequently and on a schedule - every other Saturday, for example. Making that commitment to regular and frequent confession, and finding a good confessor who can help give you spiritual direction in the confessional, is a very helpful spiritual practice. If it’s at your parish, so be it, if not, then that’s okay too. The idea is consistency and finding someone who can start to see your trends and weaknesses and give you the ammunition and armor you need to be able to win in your day to day spiritual combat.

I have found that going to frequent confession (once a week or so), plus going to a regular confessor, has helped my spiritual life in ways I could not imagine. When I first started going to regular confession, I was confessing mortal sins on a regular basis, as well as “cleaning house” of all of the nasty stuff I was doing when I was a more tepid Catholic and not going to church as regularly. As I kept up the practice, I found that I no longer actually needed to go to confession to be able to receive, and the nature of my sins changed from mortal and deliberate venial, to deliberate and unintentional venial, to mostly being confessions of devotions with reports on growth of virtues used with a particular examen.

Sometimes it’s hard to confess to my regular confessor, as he has become a good friend over the past year or so and we’ve had him over to our home multiple times. But I have found that building that trust in a spiritual guide who really knows me gives him some advantages in his spiritual direction in the confessional than when I go to the other priest in the parish, who gives me much more general advice and the stock “Three Hail Marys” penance every time I go. Also, going to a regular confessor, one that I have conversations with on a regular basis, is a HUGE deterrent for committing the nasty sins. More than once I’ve told my husband, “I can’t do that, because there’s no way I’m confessing that to Father!”

It’s also a very huge act of humility for me to have to go in that little booth and talk to someone that I will have to face later, and knowing that he knows how much of a stupid sinner I really am. But whenever I feel amazingly foolish and have a hard time making myself go into that booth, I listen to this homily from Audio Sancto. As this priest says, “God already knows what you’ve done, who cares if the priest knows!” Another good line that I think of often: “This is what Father became a priest to do. Do you think he’s going to stop now, just because it’s a friend who needs help?” Please pray for this priests and all holy priests who have given their lives to God to help lead souls to Him by absolving us from our sins and making us friends with God again.

The Sacrament of Penance (Part 1)

I have to wonder what’s not so private at your regular parish; other people can peer inside and see who is being absolved of their sins?
At my parish church, last year the parish priest got a builder to come in and put a clear glass panel into the door of each confessional, so that anyone outside can see the penitent. He said that this is now a requirement under the “clergy professional standards” and “child safety” rules. i.e. to deter priests from sexually abusing people in the confessional! On the positive side I suppose it also helps to deter false accusations.

To the OP Yes it’s perfectly OK to confess to ANY priest of your choice. There is no need to tell your parish priest or your regular confessor that you have done so unless you think it would be spiritually beneficial to you.

The only restriction is that you should at least make sure if at all possible that your confessor and you are fluent in a common language.

The Church has even ruled, since at least the 19th century, that even a vowed religious is freed from his vow of obedience towards a command from his religious superior to confess to a particular priest, or to a priest who is a member of a particular order, or to restrict his choice of confessor in any other way.

And every church Confessional MUST be designed so that penitents have the option of anonymity. If the confessionals at your church do not allow this, the priest is breaking Canon Law.

btw there is no anonymity on the part of the priest, in fact this is forbidden. He must either display his name outside the door, or else he must give his name if a penitent asks him.

I like being anonymous in confession even if its a priest I go to frequently. Having a screen and kneeler between me & the priest I like that even if there is the option to do face to face in the same room.

I’ve never done Confession in the Extraordinary Form even though I’ve gone to a few parishes that specialize in doing the sacraments that way and go to Mass in that form sometimes.

Not bad at all! Even my own priest told me that I can go to any priest, anywhere, for confession. 😃 (And I tend to prefer going to another parish as well for about the same reasons you listed, LOL!)

No, it is not bad–you can receive the Sacraments anywhere. I do this sometimes as well. Many times, I go to the church close to my work.

It’s getting pretty bad. Our brand new Cathedral’s reconciliation room is made out of glass and has no screen and no privacy or level of anonymity to it. I won’t be using it anytime soon.
