Going to hell for leaving the Catholic church

I was raised Catholic, am now in my early 20’s, and have recently made the decision to leave the Catholic church. I was curious about what the Catholic church itself would say about me leaving, and according to the Catechism, someone who has full knowledge of the church’s mission, beliefs etc, and then leaves the Catholic church, will not achieve salvation. It sounds like I’m going to hell.

This seems kind of weird. I suppose I can understand how the Catholic church got so big if it has a “you go to hell if you leave” clause in the Catechism.

Thoughts?
Brother if you totally give your life to Christ you will not got to hell. It doesn’t matter what someone tells you. What matters is what the Word of God says about salvation.

I don’t understand this entire statement, eucharisteo. Can you re-state it?
This reminds me of Finding Nemo… D…oooo… y…ooo…uuuu sssss.pppp…eeeee…a.kkkkkkk… eeee…nnn…ggggg…llll…iiiiii…sssss…hhh???

It was a joke becasue I’m really not sure what you meant by your last post. And I thought I’d give humor a chance for fun. I’m never always serious. In fact, Msgr. Gross in Lake Charles once told me that I was far too serious and to “relax”. I was 17 and being scrutinized for entry into the seminary in Louisiana. Ever since I worked on this thing people call relaxing and not always being so serious. It does not come easy for me but I’ve managed to make it work so far, minus the people that get irritated at me.

You said this in the previous post: ***That is true because you not knowing scripture is not actually in the bible. ***
I just didn’t understand what you meant by the way you phrased it. You not knowing scripture is not actually in the Bible?

And by the way, was that English? :p:p:p

Yes, I do speak English quite well…seeing as how I teach it to sixth graders 😛 Assuming a Californian doesn’t speak English makes sense, however, in this day and age…

cccccc ooould yyoooou pppllllease exxppllllain yooooour eaaaaarllllier commmmment pppplllease? 😃

“Why so serious?” 😃

The other side of the coin:

The Church is in the unenviable position of telling the truth, no matter how unpleasant.

If you, however, do not believe the Church is what She claims to be, you have no business in it.

Badda Bing… 😛
My wife teaches English. I’m the Science and Math guy…with a tad bit of history and mainly Geography. That’s what help me in my conversion. Sorry if my English is horrible. And certainly I’d hate to have to interpret some of my stuff after a while. We still laugh at some of the rediculous stuff I wrote growing up. I blame it on a poor Louisiana public school education and the fact that I went to 12 different schools before I went to college. But hey, I try.🤷

:bounce:

Actually I feel pretty good. Just got my retirement refund and am able to finally put a new roof on our house after 9 years of waiting. I also got the nerve to finally go to the college campus I plan to continue my graduate degree for education… becoming a teacher after putting up with civil engineers for 10 years and techno idiots [computer science, GIS, Planners] for another 10 prior to that. So I’m a bit bubbly today.

No need for apologies, Eucharisteo, none at all. We all get typing like crazy on here in a mad dash and often I go back and read my own stuff and think, “huh?” LOL…It’s not poor English on our parts, it’s usually our brains working faster than our hands! In my classroom sometimes I’m so excited to teach something that my words get twisted and all I can do is laugh about it with the kids! 😛 Like with the Roman Empire right now I’m so into it and so are they that sometimes I talk too fast and sound like a Pentecostal speaking in tongues!! :D:D Makes me think of Robert DeNiro in Cape Fear!! 😃

Hmm, Mary doctrines go completely against Scripture, Purgatory goes against Scripture, Popes infallibility and complete authority go against Scripture there’s some for you to digest.
In another post you seemed to indicate that you used to be Catholic. If this is true, you were very poorly catechized.

It may also be that you think the Catholic Church did something hurtful to you, or Catholics did something to hurt you, and all this anti-Catholic hostility is your reaction to being hurt.

What makes you say that, Guanophore?

Maybe you should notify the Vatican then that you say they have no business in it.
  1. It remains clear, in any event, that the sacramental bond of **belonging to the Body of Christ that is the Church, conferred by the baptismal character, is an ontological and permanent bond which is not lost by reason of any act **or fact of defection.

Peace and God bless us all on our walks of faith.

Those who deliberately leave the One, Holy, Roman, Catholic and Apostolic Church despite knowing that it is the Church of Christ go to hell. So while a Protestant who has no knowledge of Catholicism may be saved if he is a good man, a Catholic who deliberately becomes a Protestant despite knowing that the Catholic Church is the Church of Christ is damed to hell.

Well, if by “fully catechized” you mean “brainwashed to believe that there is only one true religion”, then yes I was. 12 years of Catholic school. I think your response about me not being fully catechized truly shows how people of the Catholic faith try to invalidate the opinions of others through semantics.
Try to invalidate the opinions of others? What precisely does that mean?

I don’t stand in your shoes, so I cannot judge you (beyond saying that yes, I believe what the Catechism teaches) nor speak to what you are going through, but I would ask you to consider this: Opinion doesn’t matter. Truth matters. Either the claims and teachings of Catholicism are true or they are false. Your opinion that they are not true won’t make them not true, any more than my opinion that they ARE true will make them any truer than they are or aren’t. Our opinions of truth don’t have the slightest impact on truth. It simply is or it is not. Likewise, our feelings bout truth don’t matter. Our feelings, opinions, inclinations, etc., won’t turn truth false or lies into truth.

I would urge you to learn more about the Faith. There is overwhelming evidence that it is true, that it is the Truth.

I don’t see how a statement like this is going to help keep someone in the Catholic faith when they are having doubts. You catch more flies with honey than with vinegar, and you keep Catholics Catholic through love and charity rather than spouting brimstone and damnation.

It was rather plainly spoken, but it is the truth, nonetheless. Is it charitable to fudge the truth?

Are you suggesting that the previous Catholic posters have all been fudging in the spirit of “a spoonful of sugar” or is it possible that there is an actual difference of opinion/belief between them and yourself?

By the way, a little off subject and sorry but many times the cry goes out on this forum, “why can’t we have unity!” It is my opinion that the gulf between the theology of the RCC and that of Biblical Christianity is so large that there will never be a time in the future when the unity so much desired will happen. I come to this conclusion because of the fact that I have spent so much time studying the issues and striving to keep emotions out of the picture. The cat has been let out of the bag so to speak.

Jon
I agree with you about that “gulf”. You see, Christianity is not a “religion of the book” as Modern American Evangelicals believe. Christianity is based upon the person of Jesus, who revealed Himself and His plans to His Apostles, and used them as the Foundation of His Church.

The Church founded by Christ is based upon Him, and those He placed as foundation stones, not upon any books. While the faith of the Apostles is reflected in the NT, the Scriptures are not the Source of the the faith. On the contrary, the Church was formed before the NT, and produced the NT.

When the Reformers separated from the Foundation, they turned to the next best thing they could find, the Scriptures produced by that authority. Unfortunately, they fell into the error of trying to force those Holy Words into a role they were never intended to play, creating the heretical doctrine of Sola Scriptura. Since that time, the Body of Christ has continued to splinter and fracture, all in the name of “Biblical Christianity”.

Not until those who have been separated are able to return to the One Faith taught by the Apostles will unity occur.

Fear of hell will likely keep someone in the one true faith.

Humans are not flies. The faithful were rock solid in their commitment when the Church decreed that those who did not abide were anathema. After the 1960s when some of the powerful in the Church ‘opened up’ souls by their hundreds of millions were lost when many of the faithful apostzied.

In the glory of the resurrection, Holy Mother Church should speak only the words of triumphalism and uncompromising faith.
