On Sunday I am planning on going to my first Tridentine Latin Mass. I just have a few questions:
  1. I do not own a mantilla. Will every woman probably have one so I will stand out if I don’t?
  2. Would it be disrepsectful to recieve Communion without wearing the mantilla?
  3. I’ve never recieved Communion on kneeling/on the tongue before. How much are you supposed to open your mouth, and do you actually stick out your tongue? Also, are you supposed to close your eyes as your recieve?
  4. Is it ok for me to wear nice tan dress pants instead of a skirt, as I do not have any long dressy skirts? I don’t really have a choice in this, but it won’t be really bad for me to wear pants?
Thanks in advance. 🙂

(1) Albeit that I’m male, to my knowledge there’s no requirement that a woman must wear a mantilla. In the “old days,” women wore hats just as – if not more – often than mantillas or chapel veils. In any case, I don’t believe there is a hard and fast “rule” specific to the EF about headwear. It should be the same as in the OF.

(2) ditto the above.

(3) Open your mouth, and extend your tongue sightly. The priest will know what to do. Eyes open or closed, it’s your choice.

(4) There’s no problem with not wearing a “long dressy skirt.” As with headwear, I don’t believe there are any “rules” regarding clothing, other than the standard norm that it be modest. Again, same as in the OF.

You can scarf yourself very easily, do not need a mantilla and while you are head covering, I recommend discerning the reason that you are covering…is it not to stand out? Or is it out of respect for our Lord in the Eucharist? Then remember that Our Lord is present at the TLM as well as the OF.

I think your pants will be just fine. You will be modest and very respectful…no differently than OF.

Also, receiving on the tongue is very easy…stick your tongue out just a little bit, ya know, not like when you were a kid 😛 😛 😛 naw, really, I think once you recieve this way, you will never recieve in the hands again, you will feel the respect that you are showing Our Lord.

God bless and have fun!

I went to the Tridentine Mass today and just thought I’d update this…I really loved it! 🙂 It was very reverent and beautiful. I was nervous about receiving on the tongue but I really liked receiving that way once I had done it, it was just such a beautiful and respectful way to recieve Jesus. I still love the Novus Ordo Mass as well, and I’m definitely going to go to a Tridentine Mass again when I can. 🙂 I’m just very happy right now and wanted to share.

It is wonderful, isn’t it? I just have never been able to find the “right” words for the way I feel when I attend a TLM. I was a little nervous about receiving on the tongue also, it had been some time, but soon got over the jitters and now it is second nature to me.

I still attend my NO parish where the Mass is celebrated quite reverently, I feel very blessed.

1 - No, though every parish is unique, it’s not uncommon at all to have unveiled woman, no one will notice. I strongly encourage it though.
2- Certainly not. Though I think it’s preferable, and added gesture of reverence.
3- Don’t have to close your eyes. Just open up your mouth wide, and stick out your tongue. I know, this made me very nervous too. I suggest going to a NO before then, maybe a daily mass, and try to receive on the tongue there. It may help to get rid of this anxiety, before then.
4- There’s nothing wrong with pants. Just dress in your best, like you would for any mass :). You don’t need to satisfy the congregation when it comes to dress, just your Lord, who expects your best :).

  1. No.
  2. No.
  3. Yes, stick out your tongue, it makes it easier for the priest.
  4. Yes it is.

Excellent replies.

I’d suggest to really be relaxed about the mouth. I have always received the Host on the mouth and do not remember ever having difficulties. I stick my tongue out very lightly, but open the mouth well wide so that the priest has an easy target.

My suggestion would be that you:
  1. open your mouth wide (not ridiculously wide, but well wide) and
  2. do not move whilst the priest inserts the host.
Whilst is it better to slightly stick the tongue out, I am not sure that to be tongue-conscious would make things easier, particularly if you stick it out too much.

I’d say that if you follow 1) and 2), and stick your tongue slightly out, the priest in the best condition to do his job, for which he is well trained.

As long as you don’t move everything should be fine anyway and remember that there will be a plate below your kin in case things should go wrong.

Easy does it.

Congratulations for the decision!

It’s surprising to read about Catholics who’ve never received on the tongue. I’ve never not received on the tongue, couldn’t imagine changing now, not after having persevered through the dark days of the 70s-90s.

I came into the church this past Easter and I too am surprised at the people who have never received on the tongue…I’ve never allowed a host to be put in my hand, it just doesn’t seem right.

Welcome aboard, DJ!

I admire converts a lot. It takes a lot of guts. Congratulations, and thank you for treating the Eucharist with such great respect. It sets a great example.
