Can anyone help me explain away the following …
… The only church in the world that uses a golden cup as shown in Revelation to reveal the scarlet church is the Catholic church …
… thanks in advance 😉

  1. Revelation where? There is no ‘scarlet church’ on a search; this is the closest I could come, from Revelations:
And there came one of the seven angels, who had the seven vials, and spoke with me, saying: Come, I will shew thee the condemnation of the great harlot, who sitteth upon many waters, 2 With whom the kings of the earth have committed fornication; and they who inhabit the earth, have been made drunk with the whine of her whoredom. 3 And he took me away in spirit into the desert. And I saw a woman sitting upon a scarlet coloured beast, full of names of blasphemy, having seven heads and ten horns. 4 And the woman was clothed round about with purple and scarlet, and gilt with gold, and precious stones and pearls, having a golden cup in her hand, full of the abomination and filthiness of her fornication. 5 And on her forehead a name was written: A mystery; Babylon the great, the mother of the fornications, and the abominations of the earth.
*5 “A mystery”… That is, a secret; because what follows of the name and title of the great harlot is to be taken in a mystical sense.

5 “Babylon”… Either the city of the devil in general; or, if this place be to be understood of any particular city, pagan Rome, which then and for three hundred years persecuted the church; and was the principal seat both of empire and id*olatry.
  1. Episcopalians and Lutherans use gold chalices (not cups, there is a difference) as well as Catholics.
So
A: He’s wrong in postulating about “the only church”.
B. He has absolutely no idea of what the imagery in Revelations about the great harlot really is.

… The only church in the world that uses a golden cup as shown in Revelation to reveal the scarlet church is the Catholic church …
This is their argument? That’s total non-sequitur. Their proof text will be . Revelation 17:4: The woman was arrayed in purple and scarlet, and bedecked with gold and jewels and pearls, holding in her hand a golden cup full of abominations and the impurities of her fornication;

Does that then mean that the Stanley Cup is suspect?

As you can see it doesn’t follow that that verse applies to our most holy faith. This goes along with Dave Hunt’s anti-Catholic propaganda, and CA has a couple of good articles refuting it.

Hunting the Whore of Babylon

The Whore of Babylon
Pax tecum,

Heck, Revelation doesn’t even say that the harlot is a church at all.

Well, I think Anglicans, Lutherans and the Orthodox Churches do as well. So do many other evangelical protestant churches.

Some more modern scholars believe Revelation was not written in 90 AD as some have claimed but more probably around 65 AD. If that is the case, it makes sense to read it as being about the fall of Jerusalem. Take a listen to Schott Hahn’s Bible Study on Revelation, “The End”. The “Whore of Babylon” is the degenerate population of Jerusalem just before the Roman general Titus invaded and leveled the city, destroying the temple in the process, in 72 AD.

In a similar vein, many anti-catholic organizations claim Revelation 17:9 (the seven hilled city where the harlot sits) to be the Catholic Church. This is bogus, as the Vatican only sits on one hill, and that hill wasn’t even one of the seven hills of Rome.
