tomorrow i am going to visit one of the local parishes and talk to a nun. i have a long list of questions that i am going to ask her. however, i have never visited a parish before and was wondering what the do’s and don’ts are. like is it ok for me to wear my hat, could i bring a bottle of waterto drink, etc. thanks guys:)

Are you a guy? Why are you visiting a nun?

Of course you will remove your hat indoors. But that isn’t a “Catholic” thing. It’s just plain common courtesy.

Water? Do you have a medical reason for not being able to go without water for an hour (or however long this will be)?

I think you’re just nervous. Neither of these things is much of an an “issue.” In fact, if you have not been brought up to remove your hat indoors, to stand up when someone enters the room, to hold doors for people and stuff like that, it won’t matter in the least when you visit a nun in a parish. It’s not fraternity rush.

If it’s a casual meeting then most every day social norms are to be observed. I personally don’t have a cultural conviction of the removal of hats in buildings but when entering sanctuaries or chapels with the Blessed Sacrament present I will do so. The question I would have is where are you all meeting? If it’s just in an office or other “non-holy” space then just act like you would in any other meeting.

Seeing I’m a women and I said I was visiting a priest for the first time would you say: Are you a lady? Why are you visiting a priest?

To my knowledge there is NO rule saying men can not visit with a nun.

Gardian what is the nature of the meeting? Are you meeting in the Church or does the nun have an office? Are you meeting in her office? Are yo meeting in a meeting room or any place outside of the Church itself?

I have been to meetings at the Church, put we don’t meet in the Church, we meet in one of the offices and or meeting rooms. There is nothing wrong with having some water while in these rooms. (We even have coffee time to time)

If you are a man, it’s just good manners to take your hat off inside a building. If you are a women, that just a personal choice.

If you are going to be in the “Church”, itself, leave the water in the car.

Hope this helps

first of all, i’m a guy. i am ASSUMING that we are meeting in her office. she never said where exactly. the reason i am meeting with her insteadof the priest is because she’s in charge of rcia, and because i have questions about catholicism, i’m supposed to talk to her.

I figured there was a reason like this…
In my church if you have questions about Catholicism you talk to the one Deacon or the Deacon’s wife, because they together run the RCIA program.

However, at the parish down the street people are asked to talk Sister, (a nun) because she runs the RCIA program.

However at the parish across town people are asked to talk to Father, because he runs the RCIA program.

I wish you luck tomorrow. I would bring the water and maybe leave it in the car until you find out where exactly you are meeting with Sister. You can always be “excused” to go get it.

Some parishes like mine have parish center. When we arrive at the parish center, because we are meeting someone such as Father or the DRE, the parish secretary will ask us if we need something to drink like Hot Tea, Coffee or Water.

Sister won’t let you go thirsty!

ohhhh… That makes sense…She is the DRE (Director of Religious Education). She is a person. If you were going into a Protestant Church office how would you treat the person you were going to see? That is how you treat a nun. Now, on the more practical side; most guys don’t bring up things like…I 've had a vasectomy, can I still be Catholic? The first time they meet with their DRE, whether male or female, religious or not. Just remember…she is a person whose job it is to answer your questions, if you want to talk to the priest about something more personal…fine, but she is the one that can sign you up and answer general questions about the program and about the Catholic faith…BTW…WELCOME HOME!!!

thanks for mentioning the vasectomy, i’ve had one and was gonna ask her if i would have to have it reversed or just get forgiven (prefered of course - i don’t ever want to see that particular doctor again!)

If you have the means to have it reversed “yes”…
However many don’t have the means to get it reversed.

Reversals cost a LOT of Money. The Church will not make you go into debt to have a reversal. (A vasectomy reversal is not usually covered under health insurance and can be costly: between $5,000 and $13,000, depending on many factors.)

Now if you have NEVER been baptized or had an invalid baptism then it will be forgiven at your baptism.

IF you have been baptized and it was/is a valid baptism then you would have to confess the sin in confession.

no, you would not have to have it reversed.

bring water if you want too.

take your hat off in doors - it is the old fashioned courtesy with which you can never go wrong.

Someone correct me if I’m wrong, but my understanding of the Church’s teaching would make this statement wrong. He would not be, in any way, obliged to reverse the procedure, only to seek reconciliation and practice licit sexual practice.

Hubby and I were told by our priest if we had the money to do then we should do it…

There are people that have $10,000 laying around and for them it would be nothing to go get a reversal, for them it would be like picking up a burger at the local fast food resturant. (This is because they have so much money…The “Bill Gates” of the world)

However we are NOT Bill Gate and we don’t have that kind of money. We are bless just by being able to feed our family and keep a roof over our heads. Agian I said the Church will not make you go into debt just to get a reversal.

For us it was a confession, by him and by me.

However, our priest also told us that if we were ever bless with the means to get a reversal that we should.

Please be sure to refer to her as “Sister” when you meet her followed by her last name (i.e. Sister Gabriel).

You may even want to mention that you are a little nervous and are apprehensive about making any faux pas. Sometimes when I am in an awkward situation where I do not know how to ask questions or address issues I will preface comments and questions with “Please excuse me if I do not know the right terminology or say something that appears or sounds ignorant because I am trying to ask the right questions and may not know exactly how to ask.”

Just my two cents.

I believe your priest gave his preference and not a solid church teaching. Reversals are not simple surgeries like the vasectomy was. It is serious surgery with significant risks. The church might find it laudable to undergo the procedure, but it would never promote or require the assumption of that kind of risk. At least this is my understanding.

i was planning on doing that. btw, what is faux pas?
and for the rest of you guys, i don’t have the money to get a reversal. part of the reason i had a vasectomy is because we have three boys (they get their good looks from me, unless my wife is in earshot; then they get it from her). two of my boys have autism, and this causes a lot of problems for us. many doctors think that autism is genetic, so we figured we should stop having kids. besides, have you guys priced diapers lately?

Diapers, baby food, forumla, clothings, education,…😛

Most people, like my hubby and I, don’t have the money for a refersal. It won’t be required. 🙂

Well, there ya go! Just act as you would in any other professional but personal situation. Be open and sincere. Ask the questions that are in your mind. Respond to hers candidly.

Don’t be any more nervous than you can help.

Like the hat: if you can do without the H2O then don’t bring it.

Not to worry about the vasectomy. Others have responded well on this. If you want children later, you can deal with it at that time but it is not required that you undergo the risk of surgery to repair the damage.

Hope she’s a good, solid orthodox Catholic.

Godspeed, to ya, Guardian! Keep us in the loop. I’ll ask Our Lady to keep an eye on you (even though she doesn’t need any reminders from me!).
