Good, accurate books about Catholicism?

I was wondering if anyone had recommendations for books about Catholicism which are accurate in content without being as in-depth and long as the Catechism. If they are written towards people who know absolutely nothing about Catholicism, that would be even better, since I’m planning on giving them to my boyfriend who may possibly still think that Catholics worship Mary exactly as they do God…

Catholicism for Dummies

A good book for comparing Catholicism with Fundamentalist Protestant denominations is Catholicism and Fundamentalism by Karl Keating

Another by Keating is What Catholics Really Believe

I would also recommend Catholicism for Dummies if you are simply looking at educating someone on the faith. It is a good overview that goes into subjects just enough to teach but not enough to confuse. Scott Hahn has some good books, but they are generally more specific in their aim and can tend to be a lot more in-depth than the Dummies book. The Compendium of the Catechism of the Catholic Church would also be a good choice.

I recommend Reasons to Believe, by Scott Hahn.

It is a comprehensive apologetic work that first discusses reasons to believe in God, then reasons to believe that Christ is the messiah, then reasons to believe that Catholicism is the Church founded by Christ.

What’s nice about the format for non Catholics is that they can see how logical and thorough he is in the first two thirds of the book when he is defending and supporting points that they will already believe.

It is detailed and deep but not difficult to read.

In addition, Scott Hahn’s personal conversion story as a former Calvinist minister is also compelling.

For misinformed people such as your boyfriend, you can give him the really short booklet Pillar of Fire Pillar of Truth (32 pages), for $1.

Rome Sweet Home is good as well by Scott Hahn. It talks about his and his wife’s conversion so covers a lot of concerns of protestants about Catholicism.
