What was the best advice you have ever been given about vocational discernment?

How has this helped you come to a conclusion? (…if you have)

Your vocation should give you wings. The rules and customs of whatever life you choose should free you to love God and accomplish His will, not bind you and be an obstacle.

Betsy

I later came to understand this is standard advice on the Ignatian model, to envision oneself in this vocation 5 yrs, 10 yrs, 30 yrs down the road, what do you see yourself doing, feeling, thinking, regretting etc.

“When you are in the right place, wild horses won’t be able to drag you away.” --Sr Mary Michael, Panhandle Franciscan Sisters. ("…I came to this community for a visit, and when I got here, I said ‘Psh!’ but by the time the weekend was over I saw myself on the front lawn, pushing my way through those wild horses to stay here." --her explanation of her vocation)

Also even if this is my own phrasing I think it is helpful  :
God WANTS you to know what He wants you to do. Otherwise, you wouldn’t be able to DO it.

God bless!

To Pray…

When told this, I think I said in my head ‘duh’…but after hearing it and still doing it, something changed

I had a vocation for motherhood and I knew it.

One time I was considring nun as my mother was talking me into it and this older nun took me aside and said Do you really want to be a nun?
I said no I want to be a mommy. She said well pray about it and let us know.
Best Advice I ever got!

Who constitutes as a good one? 😉
St. Teresa would put it in terms of experience and wisdom.

As for my experiences here in the St. Petersburg diocese, lemme put it this way. When you find yourself having to defend basic dogmas of the Church – e.g. the virginity of our Blessed Mother :bigyikes: – against the attacks of your “spiritual director”, it is time to go elsewhere.

When you cannot locate a director who believes what the Church teaches, :banghead: it is time to go solo.

On the other hand, when you are looking for a religious order which prides itself on obedience to the Holy Father, the Magisterium, and the local bishops, which is strongly devoted to the Holy Family, and which will discern your vocation with you, while living with you over as long a period as you wish, rather than judging you based on a bunch of papers, it is time to go to New Jersey. :extrahappy: :amen: vocationist.org/ :extrahappy: :amen:
