The best confession that I’ve had was just recently last month, after returning from a 10 year hiatus from my faith and the church. I made an appt with the priest at a local church here that I had been sitting in on my lunch hour for a few weeks, as I was feeling the need sit in a quiet church to pray.
I had gotten good ideas on how to make a good confession from several people on this site, so I went prepared with a list of sins from the past 10+ years.
I started out by explaining my situation and what it took me to get to sitting in front of him that very moment. Then I pulled out the list and explained that I wanted to make a good confesison so I brought a list.
Before I even finished reading #1, tears came to my eyes. So, I ran down the list and he listened patiently through all of it. Like some of you here, I was surprised that he didn’t fall out of his chair!
Once finished with my list and in tears, he asked me about me…
He asked me about where I came from, my old church, and what made me return, and how I got there.
He was genuinely interested in me and what I had been through.
I knew right then that I chose the right parish to be a part of.
After hearing my story and giving me absolution, my only penance was to pray for those that struggle with returning to their faith as I had. To this day I continue to do that.

I left that Confession feeling better than I had in years, like a huge weight had just been lifted off my shoulders. Like God took that weight off of my shoulders so I no longer had to bear it.
And I also walked out with the parish welcome package and registered within the next week!
