Good book for a Baptist?

I have a Baptist friend who i worked with many years ago and we still exchange Christmas cards.Last Christmas,i sent him a copy of K.K.'s "What catholics really believe"with his card.He didn’t send me any indignant letters,but then he never thanked me for it either.I would like to send him a book this Christmas as he used to have a distorted view of Catholicism.So,any Baptist converts out there who can suggest the right book.I don’t want to send him something which will seem like a blatant attempt to convert him.

Tremendous example, we had him in to speak at our church at the end of September. The man is amazing. He’s been to Jerusalem like 44 times. I could go on and on. You can probably get better info than I can give you at catholicconvert.com/

Although he was not a Baptist, this book does explain his journey and the biblical steps he took in coming home.👍

Why dont you write or type a letter and tell him how you are what youve been doing. Tell him how things are with you and the Lord, Im a former Baptist and current wanderer but I love the Baptists for their teaching emphasis. Tell him what youve learned, how you have grown or watched someone grow in the Lord.

include your email addy if you want. If you want him to understand Catholics are not what he may think then give a bit and show him.

Although you dont want to appear like those boastful look at we did this yr letter, dont know if they are popular over there but it simply highlights all the accomplishments in a yr for a family. They come across awful.

Im just suggesting a bit of info so he knows youre ok and happy and growing in your walk with Christ. That way when someone says oh catholics are this or that, he will know one that isnt. 🙂
 
I would suggest looking at *Surprised by Truth * by Patrick Madrid as well. The suggestions up above are wonderful!

There are stories in there about people realizing that the Catholic church is true! In Surprised by Truth 2, Patty Bonds’ story is in there. She was a Baptist before she became Catholic. I would also google her name and you will find so much information about her and her conversion story.

Well, I think a good book for a Baptist (which I was just reading today) is D. H. Williams’ *Retrieving the Tradition and Renewing Evangelicalism: A Primer for Suspicious Protestants. *Williams has another book out called *Evangelicals and Tradition. *These are good books for a Baptist because Williams is himself a Baptist minister (who teaches patristics at a Catholic university!). They are not necessarily good books for converting your friend to Catholicism. They are intended to persuade evangelicals to take tradition and the early Church more seriously. Of course, for some people that winds up leading them to Catholicism, or Orthodoxy. For others it doesn’t. But at least these books would challenge your friend’s Baptist assumptions.

Make sure he realizes that this is Elisabeth Elliot’s brother. She is a “pope” of sorts to evangelicals.

Question: Are the books welcome, or do you think he is just annoyed and turned off to Catholicism? I grew up Baptist, and back then, I probably would have burned the book before bringing it into my house, as I would have believed it was anti-Christ. I know Baptists who cut the horoscope out of the newspaper and burn it before bringing their newspaper into the house, because they take seriously the admonitions in the Old Testament to not bring anything detestable into their homes.

I agree with the poster who said to just send him an update on your personal testimony, and make sure he knows that you pray for him often. This might be better than an impersonal book. He is watching YOU very carefully; you are his “missionary” at this point. Maybe after he is convinced that what you have is worth learning more about will he be more interested in reading books by strangers. Just a thought.

I always found this guy to be a generous,sincere person.He was generally admired in the workplace because people thought when he got his call-up papers for the army he would come back literally swearing like a trooper.He didn’t.
There was an occasion when i was passing St.Paul’s Bookshop
(run by Nuns)and i spotted my friend scanning the bookshelves.

burnside btw Im not catholic, just saying how I like anyone to speak to me. Besides even if he doesnt convert at least you two will help unity and possibly halt some misinformation thats spread. That way when either of you two hear something “bad” about the other “side” you both can correct that stereotype.

Dont forget if satan has any hand in this split its keeping us all from talking and knowing one another, its better for him we all think the other bad as him.

The last I heard he was at Baylor. Does he have a new job?

I really liked David Currie’s " Born Fundamentalist, Born Again Catholic". As a baptist at the time, it really made sense. (But then by the time I had read it I was half way Home!) Also, Rod Bennet’s “Four Witnesses” which is by a former Baptist and is about 4 of the ECF!. Hope that helps!

There will be noone more surprised than me if he converts as he is three or four years older than me and i become 65 years old in a couple of weeks.

Actually, it appears to be the other way round. He was at Loyola when he wrote *Retrieving the Tradition. *He is now at Baylor. No surprise there–Baylor is always looking for smart Baptists (and smart people of other traditions for their other departments–but only Baptists get to teach religion, as far as I can tell).

Surprised by Truth by Patrick Madrid was very eye opening to me as a lifelong protestant. The main issue I think people have is they’ve heard the Catholic Church “isn’t Biblical”. These stories put forth in a very readable manner people who thought the same until investigating for themselves.
