So lately I’ve been receiving visits from Mormon missionaries from their local temple/church. My girlfriend and I have entertained several visits from these missionaries (who are women, hence the need for my girlfriend to be present), and discussed a fairly wide range of subjects. It seems that we may be coming to an end for their visits, as they think they will be transferred soon. She and I were hoping to find a good book to give them that will specifically address Mormonism and Catholicism, as opposed to a basic book of Catholic apologetic literature.

Does anyone know of such a work?

From what I’ve been told, they are not allowed to take literature from others (especially Catholics) - though not that they’d actually spend time educating themselves in the first place, as most non-Catholics don’t learn about Catholicism first-hand.

Here are two links I suggest you get acquainted with:

No man knows my history by Fawn Brodie. It is a fair treatment of the history, life, and beliefs of Joseph Smith.

The faith tracts on here are good, but they will most likely not accept those. The above listed book is POSSIBLY acceptable by their standards. but be prepared to have them reject it or throw it away. Many faiths outside Catholicism are unwilling to read apologetics outside their faith group.

How about a Bible! Encourage them to read the whole Word, cover-to-cover. It could be eye-opening for them.

The bible is already one of 4 of their holy books, but ONLY the KJV. The other three are the BOM, Peaerl of Great Price, and I believe Journal of Discourses, although the extant copies of that are being recalled as their theology has changed pretty radically since its publication.

I am aware of that. I was told by a former Mormon that his big revelation to exiting that faith came from reading the whole Bible, including the books he said he was told not to read (I don’t know which they were).

Thank you all for the replies. We had already considered a good, Catholic Bible, as well as a Catechism. Certainly the Bible is an excellent choice. But I was hoping there was a book out there similar to some of Dr. Hahn’s and Dr. Keating’s works dealing with fundamentalism and conversion, only from a Mormon’s perspective.

Oh well, if it doesn’t exist, it doesn’t exist.

This debate (handled in a very irenic style) between Patrick Madrid and an LDS Elder on the supposed Apostacy and on the nature of God might be helpful to them:

The missionaries will not take a book from you, but they will discuss their faith with you. Perhaps if you ask educated questions they will eventually consider the inconsistencies of their of their own faith. One question that you should ask them concerning babtism is: how do you explain your belief that black people bear the mark of Cain as punishment for choices made in the pre-existence, but also claim that sin is not inheritable and the baptism of infants wrong?

The 4 “Standard Works” of Mormon scripture are the Bible (KJV), the Book of Mormon, the Pearl of Great Price, and Doctrine and Covenants. The book that you are referring to (that is being recalled) is “Mormon Doctrine”, which is a non-scriptural book for Mormons, and is kind of like a dictionary/encyclopedia.
