Today is a great day to be reflecting on , and learning about John the Baptist. We hear of Mary going to her kinswoman, Elizabeth who is 6 months pregnant with John the Baptist after the Angel Gabriel visits her to seek her yes to God’s plan.

Pope Benedict XVI, writing as Joseph Ratzinger has a chapter in his book

Jesus of Nazareth: From the Baptism in the Jordan to the Transfiguration

covering the Baptism of Jesus. In this Chapter Pope Benedict writes about, and reflects on John the Baptist. I would start by reading this chapter if I were to read about John the Baptist and what probably the best theologian we have today, has said of him.

There will be references to other works on John the Baptist in this book that can be followed.

We have an extraordinary amount of detail on the life of John the Baptist, and this has given theologians great wealth in their publications.
There are those who believe he may have been an Essene. If you follow that track, you will also find works about him.
