Good Books for Advent

Hello,

During one of his homilies a few weeks ago one of our parish priests recommended The Great Divorce by C.S. Lewis. I got it from the library and I’m reading it.

Can anyone recommend any other good books to read during Advent? This can include books of the Bible.

good question! some I heard of yesterday were

1)Treatise on the Love of God…also Introduction to the Devout Life both by St Francis de Sales
2)St Faustina Diary
3) holyyearofmercy.com/ Pope Francis , who called for the Extraordinary Jubilee Year of Mercy will have much to share and will guide us.🙂

Chesterton’s Everlasting Man. Or for a much lighter but equally profound read, Scott Hahn’s The Lambs Supper would be especially great for Advent.

I’m finally going to try to read St. Augustine’s Confessions; I’ve heard it’s really good.

I’d say this is the best time of year to read the Lord of the Rings trilogy. The Great Divorce is great, of course.

Jerome K Jerome’s collection of short works Idle Thoughts of an Idle Fellow is… jolly good…
 
The Advent Jesse Tree by Dean Lambert Smith
The Advent Jesse Tree has devotions for children and adults for the coming of the Christ Child at Christmas.
 
From the bible?
Now is the time to re-read Revelations/Apocalypse… Maccabees is also a good read during advent, as the last books in the OT.

Fictional?
Ben-Hur by General Lew Wallace. Begin reading it today, finish Book 1 at Christmas time, then proceeded through Book 2 onwards during ordinary time, and finish the novel at Easter. This is the way the Novel is structured anyhow, beginning with the journey of the Magi(a perfect Advent tale) and ending at the Resurrection.

I like reading Dickens A Christmas Carol prior to the date as well. I often read that one at the beginning of Advent as I feel it is as much about preparing for the Christmas celebrations properly than it is about the occasion itself. Advent is the time, when like Scrooge, we are called upon to reflect on how charitable and loving we are in our imperfectness. We may not suffer visitations from ghosts, but if we stop and think over our indiscretions and selfish actions we may too learn how to love others more fully. I also try to find the time to read Oliver Twist during this period.

Devotional?
C.S Lewis is a fantastic author. Anything by him, including the Narnia series.

As the OP, I want to thank everyone for the responses so far. I look forward to more!

I was at my parish’s Advent Penance service last night and picked up some Advent pamphlets for kids, teens and adults. They have meditations and suggested readings/prayers and prompts.

The one for teens has a great suggestion for today; read St. Paul’s Letter to the Phillipians.
