Good books for introducing someone to Catholicism

Hello,

I had a friend recently show interest in my Catholic faith. I gave a 15 minute explanation, but I would really like to get her a book that explains things well. Any suggestions? Also, catholic.com is good for answering questions, but I would like a website that give a good overview of the Catholic faith. Does anyone know one?
 
The “Catechism of the Catholic Church, Second Edition” provides everything on Faith and Morals needed.
There are no errors.
It is clear and concise. (Was first published in the USA in March, 2000, and has a dark green cover)

“Catholicism for Dummies” by Frs Trigilio and Brighenti is an easy read answering many questions about the Church itself, including history.

A Catholic Bible has 7 more books in the Old Testament than the Protestant versions.
(I like the RSV-CE version in large print.)
 
Depending on what your friend’s current religious, political and scientific beliefs are, there are different books I would recommend. Could you perhaps give us a general idea? Also, to help you answer her questions, try “Reasons to Believe” by Scott Hahn, it will give you answers to hand if she asks you why you believe what you do.

I found the “Simple Prayer Book” by the Catholic Truth Society here in the UK useful, I don’t know if you have an equivelent in your country. It contains the basic prayers, the Order of Mass and a little section covering the very basics of the Catholic faith.

As a convert myself, I have to say it was a gradual discussion with friends that led me to the Church. You have to be careful with the books, as giving a friend with certain views books that express Catholic teachings in a particular way will drive them away from the Church, hence my earlier question.

Try the Holy Bible that’s always the best place to start and finish!
 
There is a good web site that explain the Catholic Mass from a protestant perspective. Check out CatholicMass.co (not COM). It is a talk given by a former Baptist convert to Catholicism.

I like stories. Jesus explained everything in stories.
Stories are attractive.
Choose the Life of a Saint of your Choice.
 
“Rome Sweet Home” by Scott Hahn is a good one! It’s mostly a conversion story. It doesn’t really explain a whole lot about how the Faith works, what we believe, etc…
 
My friend has some background in Buddhism but is not practicing. I think she is agnostic right now so there aren’t any conflicting Protestant beliefs to get the way.

The CCC " everything you need for faith and morals " Surely listening to The Holy Spirit dictates your morals. As far as faith goes that is our gift to the Father.

I’m sure Trigilio and Brighenti are good theologians. But weather they trump the Word of God I’m not to sure :hmmm:

I see that our last choice is the Bible but unfortunately it is not the Canonical texts that are being recommended to your Buddhist friend but the Apocryphal one’s :confused:

Any Saint of your choice ( God forbid any Catholic use Christ as a role model! )

I recently gave a friend the copy of the WYD Catechism. I know some have ranted about it, but it struck me as rather easy to read and well set out, directed not so much at a higher brow of intellectual faith, but getting people at the door and helpign to foster a starting point.

Granted, she told me she hasn’t started reading it… **
 
A great book/resource is The Copendium by (at the time) Cardinal Ratzinger, now Pope Bendedict the XVI.

It supplements the Catholic Cathecism, it is a great breakdown of questions and answers that are easily understood.

I found it online for around 2.00 online and it has such a wealth of information and clear explanations of the Faith.

Yes, that’s a good book to start with as well.
Maybe a Scott Hahn book? Home Sweet Rome or Signs of Life?
