Does anyone know any good in-depth books on Papal and Magisterial authority? As I mentioned elsewhere, I have a peer of mine who is considering committing Schism, because he has doubts about the Papacy and I’m almost certain this won’t be the instance in my life where I won’t have a similar situation. Whether I’m dealing with someone who is considering leaving the Church because of the Papacy, or reluctant to join, I figured I could use some good material on the subject. Does anyone know any good books? I know that Fr. Chad Ripperger has written a book on this subject.

If you want a preview, google hisnname on youtube and he gives talks about this…hope this helps.

Also, can you provide more info as to what is the issue with regards to your friend? (That way, specific resources may be provided).

The person in question is starting wonder whether or not the Papacy and Magisterium is needed, and thus, is leaning towards Eastern Orthodoxy. because of the confusing comments coming from Rome, and because these can be so easily resolved with Sacred Tradition and such, the person has suggested that the Papacy and Magisterium should be replaced with synods and ecumenical councils.

I think you and this individual first need to understand what the magisterium is. The magisterium is not the Pope alone. Replacing the magisterium with ecumenical councils and synods makes no sense, because they are already exercises of the magisterium.

The magisterium is simply the teaching authority that Christ gave the Church. This teaching authority is exercised by the pope, yes, but also by all bishops. The most solemn exercise of the magisterium is an ecumenical Council: the pope and all the bishops of the world joined with him.

To my knowledge the Eastern Orthodox do not have ecumenical councils.

Thanks, I’ll definitely add these to my Amazon wish list!
