Good Catholic book on the 12 Apostles?

First off, thank you for the last book recommendation on got on this forum- “The 33 Doctors of the Church” by Christopher Rengers, published by Tan books.

I’m up to St. Augustine, and it is excellent so far. Certainly, not an in depth treatment of any of the Doctors, but more than enough for someone not already familiar with most of them (like me) to learn a lot and get excited about digging in deeper.

Lately, I’ve been thinking about the 12 apostles a good bit, and I am curious to find a good book on their lives, especially the period following Pentecost until their deaths.

A quick search on Amazon turns up a few titles by Protestant authors (interestingly one written by a Lutheran ministers get critiqued by reviewers as “too Catholic”).

A search on Tan’s website didn’t turn up anything promising.

Anybody have any good ideas?

I second CB’s recommendation.

Pope Benedict actually has spent the bulk of his pontificate thus far speaking on the Apostles and Saints in his Wednesday audiences. He started with the Apostles, then moved on to the Early Church Fathers and went on from there. He hits all the Doctors of the Church as well.

I have all the links to the audiences gathered together on my website: The Apostles and The Lives of the Saints.

I’m behind on the current series, though. :o I need to get my act together! 😊

Have you read this book? If so, can you provide any insights? The description sounds like what I am looking for but I am hesitant to purchase it- it’s from Our Sunday Visitor, a Catholic press, but the author is the assistant pastor at a Lutheran church.

I know Protestants write many good books, but I prefer Catholic sources for Catholic Church history. “Catholic” books written by non-Catholics, raise my suspicion regarding the theology involved.

If you are able to comment on the book, I would greatly appreciate it.
