First Things has some thoughtful articles in it. They usually let you sample some of their current articles on their website.

Two more good magazines…

Laywitness

Traces (from Communion and Liberation Society)

Snapshot looks at 4 magazines I would recommend. The subtitles of each tell the story pretty well, but I’ve added short comments

The Catholic Answer - Your Questions About the Faith Answered: NOT published by Catholic Answers, this is nonetheless an excellent introduction and review of orthodox Catholicism. Two seperate Q&A sections. Very accessible.

This Rock - Catholic Apologetics and Evangelization: Published by Catholic Answers, this site’s owner, this is THE apologetics publication. Subjects here are more advanced than that of the Catholic Answer.

Crisis - Politics, Culture and the Church: There are some apologetic articles here, but the emphasis is more the relationship between the Church and the World. Very interesting stuff, but not a breezy read.

First Things - Though the editor-in-chief , Richard John Neuhaus, is a Roman Catholic priest, this is not a strictly Catholic magazine. But the non-Catholic writers are definitely on the side of truth even if they haven’t gotten to the Truth, yet. (And how many of us have more than a little way to go, too.) The emphasis here is also on culture and politics.

All the above magazines are excellent. I would warn (though I do fear being accused of snobbery), that I’ve put them in what I feel is their order of intellectual challenge. First Things, especially, can be a real mental workout and does not fit the bill if you’re looking for a family magazine.

Hope this helps.

Over 100 yrs old, the first and the premiere pastoral magazine in the U.S.:Homiletic & Pastoral Review, published by Ignatius Press.

Here is a description from catholic.net:Homiletic & Pastoral Review is the premiere publication for clergy and laity interested in pastoral issues, offering practical insights into living, celebrating and spreading the Catholic Faith today. HPR provides pastors and the lay faithful up-to-date, yet authentically Catholic articles on pressing moral, theological and liturgical matters. Each issue includes outstanding homilies for Sundays and holy days by some of today’s top homilists. Also included are book reviews and practical, insightful questions and answers by one of America’s leading moral theologians, Msgr. William Smith, as well as informative, faith-filled articles. Some recent articles: “Unjust Laws and Catholic Citizens: Opposition, Cooperation and Toleration,” William E. May; “Why We Need the New Catechism,” John Walters; “The Coming Bishop Crunch,” Edward Peters, JCD; “A Lived Faith,” James Hitchcock; and “The Holy Spirit and the Church in the Liturgy,” Cassian Folsom.
