do you think the name Blaise is a good name for a catholic child?

No. Maybe something more…I don’t know. Like Matthew, Micheal, Never go wrong with names along those lines.

I do. It’s not my practice to suggest names for other people’s children, but I wanted you to know something about St. Blaise:
Saint Blaise

Also known as
Biagio
Blase
Blasius
Memorial
3 February
Profile
Physician. Bishop of Sebaste, Armenia. Lived in a cave on Mount Argeus. Healer of men and animals; according to legend, sick animals would come to him on their own for help, but would never disturb him at prayer.
Agricola, governor of Cappadocia, came to Sebaste to persecute Christians. His huntsmen went into the forests of Argeus to find wild animals for the arena games, and found many waiting outside Blaise’s cave. Discovered in prayer, Blaise was arrested, and Agricola tried to get him to recant his faith. While in prison, Blaise ministered to and healed fellow prisoners, including saving a child who was choking on a fish bone; this led to the blessing of throats on Blaise’s feast day.
Thrown into a lake to drown, Blaise stood on the surface and invited his persecutors to walk out and prove the power of their gods; they drowned. When he returned to land, he was martyred by being beaten, his flesh torn with wool combs (which led to his association with and patronage of those involved in the wool trade), and then beheading.
Blaise has been extremely popular for centuries in both the Eastern and Western Churches. In 1222 the Council of Oxford prohibited servile labour in England on his feast. He is one of the Fourteen Holy Helpers

Yes I think Blaise is a fine strong name with a great history. I know of a wise monk who had taken the name Blaise and he was a powerful spriritual director for the Cistercian nuns in Prairie du Sac , WI.

I have always loved the name Blaise. I also think it’s a great Catholic name, as is just about any other saints name.

When and if he does misbehave, you can alway say

"What in Blaises are you doing?

better than

"What is Michael are you doing?😃

St. Blaise is 3 Feb on the Latin Calendar and 10 Feb on the Byzantine.

It’s a great name. Love it. I have an adult friend named Blaise.

You makin fun of us old folks and our phrases again? 🙂

Actually, down south you have to say “blue billy blaises”…😉

Actually, any name like that is great. Especially if you have well prepared explanations and history to share with the child when they become old enough to understand the significance of why you named them what you did. 👍

Here’s one important reason why Blaise is a great Catholic name:

CATECHISM OF THE CATHOLIC CHURCH

III. THE CHRISTIAN NAME

2156 The sacrament of Baptism is conferred "in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit."85 In Baptism, the Lord’s name sanctifies man, and the Christian receives his name in the Church. This can be the name of a saint, that is, of a disciple who has lived a life of exemplary fidelity to the Lord. The patron saint provides a model of charity; we are assured of his intercession. The “baptismal name” can also express a Christian mystery or Christian virtue. "Parents, sponsors, and the pastor are to see that a name is not given which is foreign to Christian sentiment."86

Look at the blue highlighted part again…then think of your own baptismal name. God gave us a guarantee, that this particular saint would intercede for us.

I think it sounds a lot better than many I hear. It isn’t spelled funny and you can pronounced it easily

Very nice post

St Blaise is a bishop and martyr of the early Church. It is in his name that we bless throats every year.with the blessing, “Through the intercession of St Blaise, bishop and martyr, may you be healed of any diseases and illness of the throat, In the Name of the Father, and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit. Amen”.
Prayers & blessings

Blaise is an excellent Catholic name (as many have already pointed out). Plus, it sounds cool. 😉

I like it.

Plus, it’d be interesting to see if he ever got a sore throat…😛 😉

do you think the name Blaise is a good name for a catholic child?
Blaise is a wonderful Saint and a friend of mine named her first child Blaise. He is 8 now. Love Blaise and Blaine. Good names 🙂

Yes, it’s a good Catholic name, and not one that the entire secular world uses, either.

Blaise was one of the names I was considering for my son (My birthday is on the feast of St. Blaise! - Feb 3rd - Blessing of the throats) My husband however, wanted Nathanael, (whom they think was the name of Bartholomew, one of the Apostles.) and I chose the middle name, Joseph.

Also, how about Aloysius, Regis, Stephen, Matthew or Mathias?
Brendan, Patrick and Dennis are also good names.

Just some suggestions! 🙂
