Good Catholic Reformation Book?

One of my best friends is a Presbyterian seminary student and wanted me to give him a good book from a Catholic perspective that would go side by side with his Reformation to Modern Era church History Course next semester. He read J. Gonzales early church history book for his first course and I feel has a pretty lop-sided version of the story and he wanted to get a Catholic point of view on the Reformation. If anyone has any good suggestions that would be greatly appreciated. I just want him to have something to balance out what he will be getting at his school and he is up for it.

Tell him to read History of the variations of the Protestant Churches by James Benign Bossuet.

Get the three volume set by Father Philip Hughes. It is called * The Reformation in England.* It was written in 1957. It is excellent.

Eamon Duffy’s Stripping of the Altars. It has upended the pro-Protestant bias in ‘Reformation’ studies:

There is something else. It is so well and lively written that it reads like an exciting novel and yet it is 100% committed to the Catholic faith:

so between the two books you recommended, would you recommend the W. H. Carroll book if my friend were to read one book alongside his Justo Gonzalez Protestant viewpoint? Thanks for the suggestions

Try “The Protestant Reformation” edited by Hans J. Hillerbrand and “How the Reformation Happened” by Hilaire Belloc.

thanks for the suggestions. these are some good recommendations and I have found more than one book I feel will be helpful. if any others have some good suggestions keep them coming but I just wanted to tell the previous posters that i appreciate the help

Carroll’s book is the best:

1. about 800 pages with fascinating and fully documented footnotes
2. reads like a novel

Your friend might enjoy it so much that he might want to read the other volumes. Who knows where that might lead?

For kicks you might want to to buy him a copy of Carroll’s book called The Last Crusade. It will put hair on his chest so to speak. It’s a terrific retelling of the first year of the Spanish Civil War. And, as always, it reads like a novel.

Oh, another thing! Carroll’s book covers all of Europe with some interesting things about the missionary efforts around the world if I remember correctly. Eamon Duffy’s book, although excellent, is really about ONLY England.

Your friend will probably appreciate a book that covers the most territory possible.
