Good Christian movies?

Does anyone know of any? I’ve watched the first Left Behind and tried to watch the second…terrible. I’ve seen quite a few documentaries but other than that I’m at a loss. Any suggestions?

Sadly…not many. These types of movies are typically born again Evangelical Protestsnt propaganda pieces that preach to the choir because they are the only ones who go see them.

They could do so much better in some of the movies. A movie should be a conversation starter not an altar call In my opinion.

So movies I think fit that bill are :

The Passion of the Christ
Noah
Fr Barron’s Catholicism documentary.

Outside that, there are lots of secular movies with very Christian themes.

It is as much “a Christian movie” as anything on that list…the sound of music?

Anyway the list is pretty good.

I saw “The mission” is on there and can’t believe I didn’t mention it before. It’s a fantastic movie.

The Sound of Music is like, amazing and I sing every song at the top of my lungs. I also can’t carry a tune in a bucket, so I watch it alone or people complain.

Are you looking for movies with Christian themes/Biblical based movies or just wholesome movies?

It can be hard to find good Christians movies I usually watch movies about Saints, you will find a lot of them on YouTube, another good movie is The Bells of St. Marys.

I can’t claim to understand the reason why L’Osservatore Romano once proclaimed it “a Catholic classic,” but I certainly think *The Blues Brothers *is a great movie. I listed it in my all-time top five on another thread a week or two ago:

Two other first-rate (IMHO) movies that are more obviously Christian are Zeffirelli’s Jesus of Nazareth and Norman Jewison’s Jesus Christ Superstar.

Molokai The story of Father Damien
The Nativity Story
Padre Pio Miracle Man (I’ve probably watched this over 20 times. It’s four hours long)
Vision (The story of Hildegard von bingen) A beautiful movie
St. Guiseppe Moscati (Doctor to the Poor) subtitled / english overdubs
(Lots of great saint movies are made in italy and overdubbed in English. Not always a great thing, but not horrible)
Faustina (in polish) not my favorite, but worth watching. In polish/english subtitles)
Mother Teresa (with olivia Hussy)
St. Anthony (feature length (4 hours) Italian (The miracle worker of Padua) Danielle Liotti
St. Rita (another Italian) but very watchable. Almost like a soap opera at times, but I’ve watched it several times and particularly good for women who have been in difficult marriages…
John XXIII with Ed Asner as the Pope. Liked it
Passion of the Christ
Dorothy Day Story. I’m missing this one after lending it. Can’t remember the name of the movie, but again, it’s an interesting movie for those people who have a “past”.

Bells of St. Mary’s. Although not Catholic, High Noon [1952] has a definite Christian component about a marshall, personally compelled to face a returning deadly enemy, finds that his town and his own Quaker wife refuse to help him. I don’t want to spoil the end for you, so I won’t say any anything else except they don’t make movies like that any more. It won four Oscars.

The “rock monsters” were meant to be the “nephilim” mentioned in Genesis 6. The literal meaning of “nephilim” is giants, but the Biblical meaning was the subject of an interesting thread just last week:

Hand in Hand [1961], if you can find it, is a heartwarming story about a Catholic boy and Jewish girl who are 10-year-old playmates. Particular humorous scenes have them going to each other’s religious services. It takes place just after WW-II, and the two have both communities coming together in the face of religious prejudice.

I did watch Noah and I remember saying to my husband that I didn’t remember rock monsters in the bible! I do recall nephilim but I didn’t picture that!
