Good Commenary on Ignatius of Antioch and Clement of Rome?

I’m wanting to get a book that provides some good commentary on the writings of St. Clement of Rome (circa 95AD) and St. Ignatius of Antioch (circa 110)… sort of like the commentaries on Catholic Scripture.

Does anyone have any good suggestions?

I use “The Faith of the Early Fathers”, by Jurgens. It is not a commentary per say, but it has footnotes at the end and an introduction with background at the beginning of the writings.

If you want an introduction to the Fathers there is “The Fathers of the Church” by Mike Aquilina.

Also, check out “The Fathers Know Best”, by Jimmy Akin.
 
I don’t have any commentaries, except to say that there seems to be some possible collaboration between the two…between the East and the West in the Apostolic Constitutions (eventhough,the general consensus is for a later date for this document, yet,the church structure outlined in the Constitutions is similar to that of Ignatius, and Clement says he is the compiler of the Constitutions). I think you have chosen the writings of two pivotal Bishops of the early church.
 
The Four Witnesses by Rod Bennett talks about four of the great Apostolic Fathers, including those two. It’s good at giving you a picture of what they were talking about, and what their culture and life was like.

(Make sure you get Rod Bennett’s, because there’s a lot of books about the four Gospels that are also called The Four Witnesses.)

This looks to be exactly what I was looking for. I’m assuming its Catholic and not some Protestant theologian “re-spinning” the writings to show that Sola Scriptura was a 1st century tradition?

Edited: Upon further review, it does look like its what I’m looking for. Thanks for the heads-up! Also, I noticed that Mr. Howell also wrote one on just St. Ignatius. But I plan on getting the one you referenced.

Thanks! I have read this book already and it is a great book for introducing these four fathers to us. But I was looking for something that goes a little deeper.

I would recommend this book to anyone who wants to begin to study the early Church. This is a must-read!
