I am a revert Catholic, having left when I was a teenager some 38 or so years ago. I joined a very fundamentalist, right wing cult, which over the years did a 180 degree turn and basically became a “there is no real sin, just love everyone” kind of group. That’s a little exaggerated, but not by much. No other church seemed really “right” to me, and after looking for direction from God, I started watching EWTN, and found myself being drawn home. About a week and a half ago I went to confession to a very reputable priest (one I had seen on EWTN), and I am now a Catholic in good standing, something I would have never thought would happen.

Anyway, my confession was extremely emotional, and I basically cried all the way through it, but I knew by the time it was done my sins had been washed away. But there were still a few things I wanted to clear up, so today I went to confession at my local church. I was the last one in the confessional, and the priest was feeling very rushed because he had to say Mass. But it seemed everything I confessed to him, he sort of waived away with, “oh, that’s not really a sin.” One thing I said was that I really wanted to heat up my prayer life, and I would like to do some of the devotions and pray the Rosary. He said that is not necessary, just to talk to God and develop a personal relationship with him. He said the Rosary is basically repetitive and a mantra. He said when he was younger, he would run and he would say it just to do something while he was running. He said all you’re doing is repeating the same thing over and over, and it’s basically meaningless. I’m wondering what he would say to our Lady of Fatima. 🤷

He didn’t really give me any penance, he said just to say whatever prayer I wanted, be an act of contrition or whatever.

What do you all think of this? Am I being too sensitive?

Mary

No, you’re not being too sensitive. The priest’s behavior is apalling. He’s discouraging you from taking sin seriously and from setting aside a unique time for prayer. He belittled the traditional devotions of the church and spewed modernist garbage at you. If this is what he regularly does, he’s doing serious harm to the souls of the members of his parish.

You can be certain that Satan’s influence over him was strong while he was telling you these lies. Find a different priest to confess to. In the meantime, pray for him. Say a rosary for him.

Thanks for the (name removed by moderator)ut. I’m really not sure where this priest was coming from, but I think I’m going to pray for him, and maybe say a Rosary for him! 🙂

Be sure to meditate on the mysteries though, and not use it as a ‘mantra’ - never heard such nonsense!

The priest told me you can’t do two things at once - pray and meditate. Huh?

Oh yes you can - Catholics have been doing it for centuries 😉

I suppose it depends on your definition of meditation. What we mean here is meditating in the sense of ‘Mary pondered these things in her heart’. Not meditation in the sense which it is often used of emptying the mind of thought or ideas.

When praying the Rosary you consider the events of each particular mystery, what you can learn from each one maybe, think about how it can be applied in your own life and suchlike.

From what you’ve shared, it doesn’t sound like you’re being too sensitive. Perhaps he was feeling rushed and his mind was on other things; yes, pray for him.

I had a similar situation where I did something I knew was wrong and the priest’s response was there wasn’t anything wrong in what I had done, or had considered doing - he would have done the same thing, that there was no sin! Maybe he thought I was making too much of it, I don’t know. He did give absolution, which added to my confusion.

I finally had the nerve to ask another priest I know about what happened. I could immediately tell I had put him in a difficult position in the way I asked the question (asking him to comment on one of his brother priests); but the answer was that yes I was wrong and yes it was right to bring it to confession - and he never asked me why I didn’t just go to him for confession in the first place. Lesson learned. 👍

I feel sorry for this priest, he has no idea what the rosary can do for your spiritual soul…

I mean, the rosary can bring people “home”.
