Good Economical editions of the Bible

In my school, we have a group of boys that meet for the Legion of Mary, and one of the things we do is to do a reflection of the Sunday’s Gospel passage.

My question is if anyone knows of any economical edition of the Catholic Bible that can be purchased in bulk for this purpose. We are outside the US, and so are not bound to the NAB. I’m thinking of using the NJB, but most of the versions are quite pricey. The cheapest I’ve found is the GNT, but I don’t like that translation enough to use it with my group.

Anyone has any other suggestions? Thanks!

the most inexpensive paperbound bibles in bulk are distributed by the American Bible Society, abs.org, I think. the translations with imprimature (approved by the Catholic Church) are designated by the Maltese style cross logo you see in missals.

there is no low cost RSV-CE that I know of, and I scout bibles regularly. ABS does have a Jerusalem bible but the NAB and GNT Catholic versions are still the cheapest. for bulk purshasing it is worth contacting them by phone because organizations, parishes etc. can get special pricing and shipping arrangments. They regulary ship outside the US so it is worth a phone call.

Do you live in Singapore by any chance? If so, you could try the Christian Community Bible: Catholic Pastoral Edition.

Yup in Singapore this one is many times better than the widely distributed Good News Bible. Protestants reject the GNB simply because its that badly translated.

I lived in Singapore for 14 years and that is where I was converted from the Methodist Church to the Catholic Church.

In order to really give a good answer, one would need to know what you consider “economical” in price and how many copies you would wish to purchase.

As an example, the Ignatius Press paper back edition of the Revised Standard Version-Catholic Edition (the Bible recommended by CA for study), which retails for $19.95 (US dollars), can be found new for $15.56 at Amazon (and used–5 copies presently available–at $5.00 or less)

In years gone by I’ve know groups who worked with publishers to meet needs such as yours. Perhaps Ignatius, or others, might be willing to work with you?
