Isn’t reflection true for all of Lent? I guess it comes down to the individual. Can your son properly reflect on the death of Christ on the same day participating in tennis tournament? I’m going to the park with family and friends, and even though I’m observing the fast requirements and will say my prayers etc, I still plan on having the outing. For me, I can do both.

There’s no rule forbidding tennis on Good Friday. All that is required is that your son abstain (if he is over 14).
