Here at my work the so called “Diversity Council” decided to pick today of all days to have a big ice cream social for everyone.

I guess diversity doesn’t include practicing Catholics.
Never does. 😦

Why is it that I wake up every fast day STARVING???

Agreed, but some folks read the meat prohibition more strictly than others, and I was just explaining what I thought was going as to an earlier post in this thread.

According to EWTN:

"Abstinence The law of abstinence requires a Catholic 14 years of age until death to abstain from eating meat on Fridays in honor of the Passion of Jesus on Good Friday. Meat is considered to be the flesh and organs of mammals and fowl. Moral theologians have traditionally considered this also to forbid soups or gravies made from them. Salt and freshwater species of fish, amphibians, reptiles and shellfish are permitted, as are animal derived products such as margarine and gelatin which do not have any meat taste."
Ohh----and correct me if I’m wrong but MARGARINE has no animal origin at all.

You are absolutely correct, its hydrogenated vegetable oil, otherwise known as Trans Fat (sorry my culinary student is showing:) ).

Thankfully we did not do any kitchen work in class today so I wasn’t tempted by anything.

Uh, yeah, tell me about it. My department is part of Human Resources, and on Ash Wednesday we had an all-day manager meeting that had all meals brought in.

I specifically notified my boss and the secretary in charge of the menu and ask for a NON meat option.

What did they have? beef and barley soup and a chicken salad. No option for me. Snacks/muffins all day long, candy at the table, etc. Dinner-- no vegetarian/non-meat option.

Nice diversity and respect for differences in the department that is supposed to lead the company in this area. :banghead:
I’ve dealt with stuff like that all throughout Lent this time. I work in a small law office and I am one of 2 Catholics in the entire office (I’m the only practicing one). They would order barbeque and chikfila for lunch on Fridays so I ended up getting a salad (no bacon or meat on it!) most times. Today, thankfully wasn’t a problem because I took a vacation day and I’m at home watching EWTN:D. I didn’t eat any breakfast (well, that was only because I got up too late!) and I had a grilled cheese sandwich for lunch. I’m saving my larger meal for tonight either before or after church.

All I have had today is a fish sandwhich and fries…I am hungry! lol

Interestingly enough, the Capybara (largest rodent, resembles a small pig) is permitted under the rules about meat. This is because it spends a lot of time in the water causing it to have the same rules as fish but it is very definatley a meat. I know this because we were at the zoo today.
Wow- I had never heard that!!

Now if I could just find a large Capybara pizza, extra cheese, thin crust, I’d be good to go! 😃

Think I’ll google that - very interesting!

I had heard that before. I have always thought it was interesting.

All of you who are eating fish today can just take a jump in the lake. 😛 Byzantine Catholic rules are: no animal products whatsoever on Good Friday (as well as throughout Lent, if you keep to the Strict Fast; the Lesser Fast holds one to no animal products on Wednesday and Fridays, as explained by my priest). We have been sick as dogs for a while, so were keeping the Lesser Fast.

Today I’ve had a slice of artos, half a peanut butter and jelly sandwich, and dinner was a vegan “burger”. I just wrapped up a huge loaf of pascha bread (filled with butter and eggs, yum) for our Easter basket…I’m hungry!

To the OP: If it were time for a small meal for me, I would have taken a small slice in order to share fellowship with my coworkers. But that’s me. Glad you were able to get through the tantalizing smell! 👍

I heard of it actually. Jimmy Akin mentioned it on his blog. There is no way I will ever eat rodents, though!

Just for those who are reading and don’t understand…

Jesus gave up His flesh for us on Friday.

So we give up flesh out of respect for Him on Friday.

His blood is warm,so no warm blooded animals.

Hence fish because their blood is cold.

And I can understand the “temptation”. Where I work they cooked up a barbeque for all employees today. The thing is it was a **free **lunch. That’s what bothered me.I missed out on a free lunch.

Does this mean we can eat lizards?

Not that I want to.

So does that mean I can have my Diet Coke that I gave up for lent??! 😃
To me the Triduum is more penitential than Lent itself. I’d stay away from the Diet Coke until after the Easter Vigil (or Easter Mass if I didn’t go to the Vigil). Then it’s time to celebrate!

Ah, but everyone knows there ain’t no such thing as a free lunch!

It seems to be a case of eating things that primarily live in water (like fish and capybara) versus things that live on land (like beef or chicken). So I’d stay away from the lizards and eat a dolphin instead. Poor Flipper. 😦
