There are Christians who are followers of Christ, and there are also christians (note the lower case c) because they aren’t something else. They’re not Jewish, or Hindu or Muslim or Shinto…they’re people who sort of believe in God. I was married to one of those. Easter and Christmas are holidays the family but they hold very little religious significance. I think I know more people in this catagory than in the Christian category. Out of my little team of associates here, we have two Jehovah’s Witnesses (one helped the other get the job, or that would be a huge coincidence), one Baptist and me…we actually go to church and practice our faiths. Then we have 3 lapsed Catholics and two who occassionally attend church, one Baptist and one Seventh Day Adventist. Finally, one who has no religious affiliation of any sort. The one practicing Baptist and I would be the only ones who would blink at a Good Friday wedding. Nobody else would even notice. They’re all nice people, but religion does not play a part in their lives.

I’ve been invited to such a wedding, but accepted the invitation before I began to return to the Church and start attending mass regularly again. The wedding is being held in a Church of Scotland church (I’m surprised that the Kirk would allow such a wedding - I can remember going on a Good Friday procession of the Cross as a child in which the Church of Scotland and Free Church of Scotland were both involved).

My gut instinct is very much not to attend the wedding at all. I also feel quite uncomfortable with the idea of going to mass but then continuing on to the reception afterwards. However, I’m worried that in doing so, I might offend my elderly grandmother, who is closer to the couple concerned that I am, and passed the invitation on to me. Although she was never received into the Catholic Church, she attended mass regularly before my grandfather passed away, and continues to do so from time to time.

I tried submitting this question to the Apologists but did not get an answer.

Should I attend my friend’s wedding on Good Friday?

She is not Catholic, the ceremony is not Catholic. It is actually being held at 2:00!! I will be in church for Good Friday service at that time but should I go to the reception? The two menu choices are both meat. I actually told her I would not be able to attend but then she seemed upset and told me her other "Catholic’ friends were attending and saw no problem with it. What do you think?🤷
I assume that you friend is not Christian, since Good Friday even if you are not Catholic is a solemn, prayerful day for almost all Christians.
