I have missed the Services of the Passion. 😦

As a Candidate is this a grave matter?

Here I thought growing up that it was a Holy Day of Obligation. Imgaine my surprise when I saw here on the CAF forums yesterday that Good Friday is indeed not a Holy Day of Obligation.

It helps to remember that Holy Days of Obligation require us to attend Mass and there is no Mass on Good Friday.

Thanks. Probably why I thought it was a Holy Day of Obligation is that as a kid growing up, my Mom said YOU WILL go to Good Friday service, period end of discussion.

It is, however, a day of obligatory fasting and abstinence.

accidentally missing mass or being physically unable to attend in not a mortal sin. Actively deciding to not attend mass is however very serious. If you sincerely want to go to mass and can’t then it’s not a sin. Although good Friday does not have a mass, I would strongly encourage you to go if you can.

As others have mentioned, this is not an obligatory liturgy. But if you do wish to attend --and you live somewhere in the Western Hemisphere-- there might be a neighboring parish that has an evening Passion Liturgy.

I know it’s not the same as your own parish, especially when you are a candidate. But it’s still an option.

Its good to go though because how can you have Maundy Thursday then Easter Vigil on Saturday without the waiting of today…

I have tried hard to get out of going today and really don’t like it. But I go because I cannot think of an excuse not to. My dad misses easily enough but for me I do go though I find it that hard that get grumbly headache…

Though for a treat, or not as we did know for those of us paying attention. We had one of the Bishops today who in his sermon acknowledged the ones of us who don’t like it. I wonder if he’d read the email I sent my priest:blush: Though I know not because a) the priest is very discrete and b) its pretty standard really not liking today. 😛
