It’s tough to find good health insurance that is affordable not through an employer… my current insurance stops covering me four days before our baby is due  and I can’t renew with them. Anyone have suggestions for insurances that aren’t too picky about pre-existing conditions like pregnancy?

I dunno, my guess you’re prolly not gonna find a company to insure the cost of the baby. It seems to me if you insurance was in effect when you became preggers, they should pay. You might wanna get some advice from an attorney.

I don’t know of ANY insurance company that is not picky about pre conditions. Shoot, EVERYTHING is pre existing condition in their books.

I’ll try contacting them about extending coverage at least through the end of that month, but I don’t know if it will be successful or not because it was through my university and now that I’m graduating… worth a shot though 👍

You could do a health savings account. I don’t know exactly how they work, but Dave Ramsey talks about them a lot on his show. You could go to his website and he has a section for endorsed local providers, click on the insurance button and have someone contact you to get more information.

I think the way it works is it’s basically a catastrophic-type policy – it’s a policy with a big deductible so you’d be paying out of pocket for most office visits, et cetera; but if you were to be hospitalized or had an ER visit, then the policy would really click in.

If you’re relatively healthy, it might be an option for you.

The plans we are looking at are through Dave Ramsey’s elp. They are high deductible, but that keeps the premiums low. For the two of us with the highest deductible and 100% coverage is $140ish a month I believe. If we just want 80% coverage I believe it is 90 something. We’re wrestling with the two. Not sure if the extra 20% is worth fifty bucks a month.

A group plan (i.e., through an employer) cannot call pregnancy a pre-existing condition due to HIPPA guidelines. An individual (i.e., purchased on your own) plan can do whatever it wants. If you don’t have access to a group plan, have you looked into Medicaid? The income restrictions are usually looser for pregnant women, and the baby counts toward the total number of people in your household.

You could also deliver 10 days early like I did! 😉

Journey, have you checked in with your health insurance provider and gotten the for-sure answer on the plan’s expiration date? My DH is on the university’s health plan, and since we paid for it for the entire academic year, it will cover him (in the local network, at least) even though he has graduated, and will cover him almost until the start of next school year, when the new plans go into effect. It might be worth looking into…

Not trying to start an argument, but have you considered talking to your doctor about having a c-section 4 days early? While natural birth is eminently preferable, doing it this was would cause the insurance company to be guilty of abandonment if they dropped you at that point.

I had a nice chat with the insurance rep today and he told me that due to COBRA, they had to provide me with up to six months continuing coverage, but I had to enroll online. He also said that if I gave birth before the expiration of my policy they could not legally drop me because I’d technically be disabled and that’s illegal. I got online and looked and it said I had to have a letter in writing sent to them and pay the premium, but there was no place to actually enroll online… Ahh well, at least most of my question was answered, and they should provide me with a direct link to this mystery place online (I looked for almost an hour I think) so I can enroll myself whenever they get around to answering my email.

Thanks for the quick tips and other health insurance options I had never heard before (HSA). CAF members are always so helpful 👍

I was considering this route, too. We’re both healthy, no conditions, no medications, etc.

But I noticed those HD plans don’t have maternity or baby coverage.

What about yours? Could you PM if they do?

If you want to PM me (or post here) with the company’s website address, I may be able to help with this 🙂

I don’t think they do, but from what I’ve heard maternity coverage is extremely expensive to add to any individual coverage. Actually, dh just got a new job that provides limited insurance for us. It would cost the same as the high deductible, but it only pays a certain amount per year. It covers up to 1500 for maternity. I’m trying to figure out which one would be best. I’m really not sure. If something horrible happens the high deductible one is better, but I’m just not sure.
