Is it a good idea or bad to tell your spouse about your sins, especially lust/masturbaition?

How much do you and your spouse discuss about sins?

I think it depends on whether they ask or not (and asking is usually a bad idea), then you shouldn’t lie but answer with charity and respect and a minimum of detail. The truth should not hurt others.
Also ask yourself, “What’s my motive?” If it be for forgiveness, consider going to confession instead.

As far as discussing one another’s sins, that’s separate and private in my marriage. Many people don’t like being “saddled” with others secrets, it can cause resentments and judgments. I found that out the hard way and it caused a strain on our marriage.

I think when speaking about past sins one needs to be very careful to empashize what is past and what is the present person, especially if there has been a conversion. I also think one needs to be very careful as discussing some past sins can lead to its form of temptation.

Your sins are for the confessional. Period.
Normally, I would agree. The marital relationship is different than any other and the truth is the sins of one spouse can greatly effect the other.

I, personally, prefer full disclosure of sins that directly effect me such as lust and masturbation. Others prefer their spouses go to Confession and never say a word to them. so, I don’t think there is any one right answer. It really depends on the spouse. My husband is the same way. We’ve for sure had some struggles, but those were nothing to what we would have had if one or the other of us wasn’t totally honest and were to be discovered later.

I have never been married. If I was married and my husband was away on a business trip or taking care of a relative out of town and he told me he masturbated, I will probably not be upset but I don’t think I would understand why he as telling me.

If I was married and my husband told me he lusted after someone other than me… I honestly don’t think the marriage could ever be saved

It’s a bad idea in most cases. For instance, it would not be a good idea to tell your wife you masturbated while fantasizing about her sister/best friend etc. Your wife can’t help you, and the disclosure could do irreparable harm to your marriage. Go to confession. Pray the Rosary. Talk to a counselor if need be. Don’t talk about this stuff with your wife.

Why would you be able to shrug off masturbaition but not lusting?
