Good movies and shows on Netflix?

The United States of Tara

(pretty much in that order)

These aren’t really off-the-radar except that last one but they’re all good shows for binge watching. Not very Catholic oriented but since you mentioned the Walking Dead I thought your tastes might run towards something a bit more dramatic.
 
There was a movie I saw on Netflix a year or so ago called Best Man Down. At first it doesn’t seem like a positive movie. The best man at a wedding gets very drunk and dies that night. The newlyweds forego their honeymoon (one of them reluctantly) to deliver the body back to his family. It’s there that bit by bit that they try to make sense of what he’d been doing the year before and try to find the truth behind some of the rumors about him.

Again, I realize this doesn’t sound like a positive movie; but it really is.

I tried watching the fist 3 on your list and couldn’t get through 1 ep. I guess I’m too sensitive but it’s very hard for me to watch too much violence or sex, even excessive cussing bothers me 🤷🤷

I do realize that for others it’s not a big deal and not an ocassion of sin but for me it unfortunately is :(😦

I don’t mean to be flip. I am really wondering how one could justify paying for any tv service given the criteria you set forth. You realize that outside of kids programming you probably are limiting your viewable content by 90 percent yet you would be paying for 100 percent

I know right! Hehe This is why I didn’t have a tv service for 5 years. I got a good deal with internet a year ago but I will cancel it once my contract runs out next month. I only watch documentaries on Discovery or History channel, some news and old sitcoms etc.

I do pay for Dramafever since it has the content I want and like I said before it consists of the majority of what I watch. I know watching kdramas or variety shows I"m pretty much in the clear hehe.

I do want to say I don’t expect the majority of people to do this or need to tbh. Obviously every faithful catholic should guard their entertainment but many people can watch shows and not be affected by it. But, I have a sensitive and wounded soul and watching any of that content leads me to sin so I have decided to eliminate it. It just makes my life easier. Believe me, I have tried and used to watch mainstream shows but I can’t do it anymore. It does keep me out of the loop of all the shows people talk about but my friends and family don’t give me much grief about it thank God :D:D

I do have a friend who has similar tastes and when we get together we go crazy talking about all the stuff we’ve watched since we have no one else to do it with lol.

And, your question was not flippant so no worries 👍👍
 
I watched two good movies today Little Boy which is set during WWII. I would give it a B-. The 2nd movie I watch was The Offer with Geoffrey Rush. I need to watch it over because I had to use subtitles as I was the only one home and the sound went out!!! It was definitely an A movie. Donald Sutherland was in it. Lots of twists and turns and I didn’t see the end coming. I like movies that you don’t have figured out in the first 20 minutes!
 
The 100 - it is a hard science fiction post nuclear war series. The plot features heavily teenagers, which I thought would make it terrible. But my wife and I ended up enjoying it. There is some small sexual content. It is not shown but as I recall implied and discussed. There is violence but I don’t recall it being particularly graphic, at least by modern standards. It does air on the CW.

Firefly - a single series show that I think is best described as a space western.

There are no gratuitous sex scenes or violence in the first season. The second season IMO is not as good as the first and has more dicey stuff but nothing over the top. The show even has a vicar and he is presented very fairly I must say.
You can easily watch the first season alone and be satisfied btw.

I just finished the first season and started the second. The first season was exceptional.

These things aren’t so much an occasion of sin for me but an occasion of great annoyance. These elements are gratuitous. They are lazy. They are justified as adding gritty realism. But that is silly. Real realism would be incredibly boring.

I like the miniseries on the Tudors. It gives a bird’s eye view into many factors influencing the Reformation.

I liked that too. It was fun to watch. Another good one is a BBC production called Wolf Hall. Not sure if Wolf Hall is on Netflix though.
 
I’d recommend Daredevil, based on the Marvel Comics character. Surprisingly Catholic (the lead character practices), and extremely well-acted and scripted. Very violent, but not cartoon-y… quite realistic, which IMHO makes the violence tougher to watch, but easier to stomach. My wife and I binge-watched it over a week… and season 2 will be out soon.
 
I second the TED talks and documentaries.

Just recently watched a film/documentary called “Dear Zachary.” Better than any tv drama, and absolutely true when they say “you can’t make this stuff up.” Powerful and moving.
