University of Pittsburgh researchers have discovered that one type of cell in the human placenta has characteristics that are strikingly similar to embryonic stem cells in their ability to regenerate a wide variety of tissues.

The cells, called amniotic epithelial cells, potentially could be used to produce new liver cells to treat liver failure, or new pancreatic islet cells to cure diabetes or new neurons to treat Parkinson’s disease.

Sadly, I don’t think this news will sway the pro-embryonic research crowd. They seem determined not to lose the fight.

The whole thing drives me nuts. I was listening to the news break on my local Airhead America station, and the news reader referred to the far right “who are against all stem cell research”. Well, there’s some fair and balanced news.

Unfortunately, the purpose of embryonic stem cell research is not to produce cures to disease, but to justify abortion on demand.

Folks, it’s about stem cells from a placenta! I am sorry, I should have clarified. University of Pittsburgh researchers have discovered that one type of cell in the human placenta

Vern,

I completely agree 👍

Stop the presses.

What’s the harm in using stem cells from a Placenta? They are not killing embryos, what do they do with human placentas at the hospital? Burn them?

It’s understood. The points being made are that there are other agendas behind embryonic stem cell research, so the news won’t necessary stop the controversy.

Perhaps they will find success with this and stop wanting to do embryonic stem cell research.

How you figure?

I doubt it. They will always want to do embryonic stem cell research because it is their attempt to assuage their guilty consciences over legal abortion.

I am the daughter of a research scientist who was one of the pioneers in identifying the existence of stem cells. A devout lifelong Catholic, his primary focus was in identifying the causes and cures for leukemia. (I’m not kidding - if you PM me I will be happy to provide you details.)

My dad had a keen lifetime interest in following other scientists’ research and applications of stem cell technology. Shortly before our Lord called him home, my dad shared this with me:

Adult (already differentiated) stem cells from blood, fat, etc., have brought about many hundreds of cures world-wide. These cells already know what they are supposed to be and to do. Much exciting research is proceeding with stem cells that do NOT destroy human life.

Embryonic (undifferentiated) stem cells have no idea what they are supposed to be or do, and no researcher has ever figured out how to change that. They have been tried in only 30-some people world-wide. In every case, the cells went wild and caused violent, fast-growing, deadly cancers.

The Lord has quite clearly made His purpose known, giving us means to bring about new cures, while ensuring that those who would destroy innocent life produce nothing.

Not everyone who works to cure diseases supports abortion. I frankly don’t see how you get aborted babies from a scientist extracting stem cells from a placenta to find cures for diseases.

Exactly, at Duke they use umbical cord stem cells to treat certain types of cancers.

As pointed out by others here, embryonic stem cells have a lousy track record. Adult stem cells have been successfully used in many cures.

The only ethical research with embroyonic stem cells is pure research – there is no way they can be used in humans at this stage. That means the existing strains of embroyonic stem cells are adequate for their purpose.

Yet to hear the proponents tell it, cures for everything from acne to tennis elbow are right around the corner – if only we can get enough embroyonic stem cells.

Why would they tell whoppers like this? So they can legitimize killing embroys. Which in turn legitimizes abortion - if you can kill the unborn for science, surely the unborn can be killed for other reasons.

Part of the deal here in California is that they can paten (spelling? sorry!) the different embryonic stem cell lines… It is largely about money. If CARose was here she could explain it more… Different pharmacutical compaines want this because it means more money…

This information might help in educating and swaying the everyday supporters of embryonic stem cell research that know nothing about what they are really supporting types.

Thank you for the information it is important that people understand these facts.

May the Lords peace fall upon us all.

That’s right, the only “use” is revealing the horrific nature of the crime. nothing other than that. as a cannibalistic abortionist and “artist” found out the taste of babies “disgusting”.

These are stem cells from a human placenta. Medical science already uses stem cells from umbilical cord blood to treat cancer. ** I think the problem is people here believe ALL stem cells come from human embryos.** Not so.

If embryonic stem cells had a good track record, or if cures for acne and tennis elbow really were around the corner, would you support that research? What if the only embryonic stem cells used were those derived from the excess embryos produced at IVF clinics - embryos destined for destruction anyway? What would be wrong with that? Is is more holy to throw those embryos in the IVF clinic dumpster than it would be to procure stem cell lines from them, for the possible good of all humankind?

Lily,

I tried to explain before, people here understand that stem cells come from the placenta, adult sources etc. You are not reading the posts very clearly. What we are saying is that this won’t stop people who are pro-embryonic stem cell from pushing their agenda.

My point about the news story on Airhead America, was the ridiculous statement that we don’t support “any stem cell research”. If he had said “any embryonic stem cell research”, he would have been accurate. The confusion is in the general populace, not here on this Forum.

God Bless,

Robert.

Lilly,

Like rlg94086 said… Our point is not that they are focused on using embryos. Their motivation is more money for themselves. We know that they won’t make progress, but, they won’t stop because it gets them too much money.
