Hey all! The good news is, my father has not touched a drop of alcohol in two or so months. He and my mom agreed to go to a family counselling session, which ended up helping immensely. My parents have begun respecting my space, giving me more privacy and freedom than before. Overall, we have a happier home life…though, there are still some issues with my aunt and family friend. But it’s more bearable than before.
Right now, I am asking for prayers for my father who is going through a really bad time, physically. He used to be very obese, and in 2001, he went for a gastric bypass. He lost 176 lbs, but a year later, he went under emergency surgery to repair a mistake his negligent doctor made the year before. He almost died.
The part of his intenstines that needed to be removed to save his life was an essential tool in the absorbtion of nutrients. So taking vitamins orally was doing absolutely nothing for him. We found that out too late.
In 2007, my father fell in our hallway. In a simple fall, he broke both feet, both ankles, his right leg, and tore his achilles tendon. His right foot shattered, and we thought he’d never walk again. Well, through the blessings of God, and an extremely competent physician, he was up and walking after an extensive reconstructive surgery that left him with a metal plate and screw in his ankle. While he was in rehab for his legs, he was struck with a terrible fever that sent him into unconsciousness. He had a septic infection that gave him a 50% chance of survival. The cause? The negligent doctor who performed the gastric bypass was supposed to remove his gallbladdder during the surgery, but didn’t. As a result, it became severely infected over 6 years. He underwent an operation, and yet again, the Lord blessed our family and let him come home to us.
The broken bones were a result of osteoporosis, which he got from being unable to absorb all the essential nutrients.
Next, his teeth started to come out, which brings me to the most recent problem, and the reason for asking for prayers.
He has all his top front teeth, but was using only one bottom tooth in order to chew (he has no others on the bottom). Well, that bottom tooth just had to be extracted like all the others. It was rotting out. Mind you, my father is a VERY hygienic man. He has taken care of his teeth everyday all his life, so this is not a result of poor hygiene.
Now, he can’t eat anything. And because he has a very high risk of getting another bowel obstruction, he is afraid to eat any food that will not digest easily. So basically, he is living on one protein drink per day. The man who underwent a gastric bypass for obesity is now underweight, and is rapidly losing more and more each day. He’s weakening, and it is so sad to watch this happen and to not be able to do a thing about it. We can’t afford any dental work right now, either. Financially, things are not good.
Please, please pray for him. I am not sure what else to say…if you have any suggestions, they’d be greatly appreciated. Other than that, your prayers are most welcome. Thanks.
