That scenario isn’t really that likely to happen, even if this story is accurate and the leadership of the SSPX is brought back into the church.

First, there is no guarantee that the Portland chapel wouldn’t drop out of the SSPX which they might if they were not satisfied with the terms of this proposed accord.

But even if they did come aboard, the Portland archdiocese might be just as likely to merge the current diocesan Latin mass with the SSPX chapel and just have one site. Depends on the projected total attendance/contributions and the actual attendance and contributions afterwards.

To give an analogy from the business world, Macy’s bought out the Kaufmann’s department store chain here in Pittsburgh, Macy’s is closing stores all over the metro area, as there is no real need or motivation to compete with one’s self.

I saw something about this on the FOX news ticker. It said the Pope was mulling over lifting the excommunications. I wonder where they all get their info? How often are we told what the Pope is mulling over? Cracks me up. I wish they’d just wait until news actually happens before they report something might happen. Everyone was waiting on November 19th this year, right? We’re still waiting.

The Catholic Church isn’t Macy’s. Bet the ranch that any agreement will cover existing chapels/parishes.

Quite probable, but what would stop the Portland diocese from closing the current indult site if they thought that one Latin mass site were enough for the town, could satisfy most everyone who wanted to hear the Latin mass.

The Church isn’t Macy’s. But it doesn’t mean that there isn’t any business sense in the church.

I hope and pray that this will happen, but the source is not real strong…Will be watching the more reliable Catholic news sources for hint of this.

Yes, I go to Holy Rosary at 11am. I think that mass is the embodiment of the true intention of VII.

Well, this story was just mentioned on EWTN Radio’s news brief…so

RE: Portland would likely close Indult if SSPX is regularized.
Not so sure. BECAUSE, if the SSPX comes in it will only agree to do so if NOT under the thumb of local bishops…which have shown to be their arch-enemies.
It would look something like a Melkite rite with its own hierarchy.
This would REALLY po the NO bishops as “$money covers a multitude of sins” (the NO bishops especially on Washington state have their own gospel.)
The money from SSPX would still not go to the NO sodomiestas.
If the SSPX does not yield on this “separate” administration, then it will be a real coop if B-16 would still bring them back in.
He’ll have to call the trouble makers in the bp conferences aside and ask them if they would enjoy a ministry in Pakistan.

This was my thought…It would have to be on SSPX terms or they might not come back…doesn’t seem like a group that compromises much.

Even if the SSPX were brought back, there are some within that Society who would break off and continue their schismatic ways because they oppose any compromise with “modernist” Rome. And if one of them happens to be a bishop, the schism will continue for decades…

Here is what their leader is saying and they are long way from coming into union with Rome:

Why the new tactic of Rome, to what end? Certainly the Pope would like to regulate the ‘problem of the Society’ quickly, but in their own perspective. On our side, we have always insisted : before any practical solution, one must eliminate the principles which 1/ are the causes of this crisis and 2/ would kill the Society if we were to accept them. We cannot therefore accept a practical solution.

The discussions thus remain at this level. We demand the examination of these deadly principles which have entered the Church, to eliminate them, to reject them. This liberalism, modernism, has entered the Church and kills the Christian life, and is manifested by ecumenism, religious liberty, the laicized state, these same principles which are repeated by the Pope even now.

The Pope recently said that by the laicized state, “we have returned to the Gospel”. But the Gospel says exactly the opposite : “He must reign” (oportet eum regnare). All authority comes from God, and must answer to God. All must render an account of how they have exercized their authority. Our Lord is the King of all.

Also, the civil life has a great influence on the life of the soul, and the contrary is also true. The society must therefore be impregnated with the law of God. There must be a harmony between the state and the Gospel. But for the Pope, he says the state ought to be laic - a principle which is taken as a first principle, indisputable. Thus an immense stumbling block. In short, the problem is the Council.

Mgr. Flellay then says that we must simply continue the route traced out by Archbishop Lefebvre, our founder, simply this. The promise of indefectibility given to the Church tells us that one day she will survive this crisis. And so we must work, each one in our place, with all our force, to realize the survival of the Church.

Thus, evidently, we must have relations with Rome in order to accomplish this. It is an error to think that we cannot speak to them. We cannot wait for the day where they will wake up and be Catholic…

The likelyhood of any group of churches within the Roman rite not being under the authority of a bishop would seem to be nil and none. I don’t know of any such groups currently. Do you know of any?
