Glory to Jesus Christ!!

For all those following the other thread on SB1348, the immigration amnesty bill-------***it just died in the Senate! It needed 60 votes and got only 45! And Harry Reid just withdrew it!!!:dancing: :extrahappy: :bounce: :whacky: :dancing: :extrahappy: :bounce: :clapping: ***

So now, if the government would just fund and enforce existing legislation, we might just see some improvement in our almost-non-existant border situation.

May God grant His Peace to and Smile on all of us,
Jeff

The great problem with illegal immigration is the vast conspiracy to hide illegals when they get here – from police who aren’t allowed to report an illegal when they arrest one for a crime to states that offer free college educations to illegals.

It ought to be a crime to aid and abet an illegal alien.

You know, I’m all for immagration refrom, I just think the bill would just lead to more illegal immagrants. Until there really are mechinisms in place to regulate the flow, like work place enforcement and border enforcement, what does it matter if one falls off the path to citizenship? Certianly I doubt one could deport all 5 million people if they just blow off the requirements. And the sob stories won’t go away, if any enforcement happens.

I’m sorry but I cannot believe you could be happy with what happened.

The Catholic Church supports the reform. How sad to see Catholics being so racist.

Shall I take the bait you are so obviously and temptingly dangling in front of me (and my fellow “racists”), or just ignore it? Aw, shucks, I’ll bite, simple fool that I am…😃

Believe it! That ***particular bill ***was an abomination from beginning to it’s well-deserved demise this morning. I don’t think there’s any further need to debate here it’s pros and cons–it’s dead, whether you like it or not.

You say, “The Catholic Church supports the reform.” Did you mean the Vatican? Did you mean Pope Benedict? Did you mean the Body of Christ? Did you mean all Catholics all over the world? Or did you just mean the USCCB and however many U.S. Catholics agree with them?

The last time I looked, to disagree with the USCCB, et al. was neither a crime nor a sin, especially in matters that are not clearly and explicitly to do with faith and morals. Someone please correct me if I am wrong!

Now, to get into name calling here, is well, un-called for, and un-Christian. So, if I disagree with you, I’m a racist? As a Jew who has converted to Catholicism, I could choose to take deep offense at your remark. Instead, I shall just consider it a slip of your fingers on the keyboard and forgive you your carelessness. Perhaps next time you will choose your words a little more carefully?

I do not disagree that immigration laws and enforcement need some reform in this country. What I did disagree with was this bill and all of it’s negative ramifications, most of which you were probably un-aware of and are now irrelevant, thanks be to God.

God Bless,
Jeff

Nope, not unaware of the facts. I followed it too closely because I know people who would’ve benefited from it. Sorry if you took my words as offensive, I didn’t mean to be. It just makes me angry how Catholics are against something that will help millions of people (who are mostly of Catholic origin - since most are in fact, Hispanic).

Besides, if the USCCB was supportinve of a bill that could help/affect many people in the US, then, I go with the USCCB. It is the US it’s affecting, am I wrong?

Well, just one thing… even Jesus Christ was an immigrant… when he was born Joseph and Mary fled for Jesus’ safety… those millions of immigrants are doing the same… to survive and help their families survive. This country has always been a country made up of immigrants. The 1st Americans were immigrants from Europe. Everyone here is an immigrant.

It’s unfair to see how this country treats the people who come here to do the jobs Americans aren’t willing to do. They work double or triple jobs to support their families, and the jobs they have pay less than the minimum wage, but they work and work and most are honest people. Sure, there are many criminals among them, but the majority are good people.

Don’t you think Christ would want us all to get along? I am saddened that this country has forgotten where it came from.

That said, I won’t bother you here any longer. Again, I apologize if I offended you. I just think if the USCCB is or was supporting any bill, we as Catholics in the US should accept that.

You don’t see Americans being kicked out of other countries just because they are American. Here, if you look brown, “you must be illegal”. People live in fear here, and many support that.

I hope one day, law-makers can see the financial significance the immigrants, whether legal or not, are making. The US needs these people. Even Bush can see that.

I think you owe everyone here an apology for playing the racist card.

I agree with Vern… Just because we don’y like the bill doesn’t mean we are racist. What happened to all the money that was allocated last time immigration reform went through? We are still waiting for enforcement of those laws and for the fence to go up… that doesn’t make us racist… just law abiding.

Do I really need to waste my time to do the research that will enumerate how many Americans have been been kicked out of various countries or beaten, harassed, spit upon, and killed, yes, killed just for being American? But that’s fodder for a different thread that I don’t want to get into.

Perhaps before we give carte blanche to virtually anyone and their entire extended families to come here for any reason whatsoever, we should look to improving conditions in their home countries so that they won’t feel so great a need to come here–illegally, that is.

I, too, know people who would have benefitted from passage of the bill. I also know people who would have suffered greatly because of it. And I really couldn’t care less what color their skin is, either. I, too, have been an immigrant and know what that is like. And, by the way, I did it legally.

While there are many jobs that immigrants do that others won’t do, to imply that all immigrants are doing jobs that nobody else would do, is a specious and untrue argument. Just ask all the U.S. citizens in the mid-west who are unable to get very well paying jobs in the meat packing plants because illegal immigrants are being hired to do them. You know, don’t have to pay employment taxes, social security, provide insurance, etc., etc., etc.

I’m sure we could go on and on. But the bill is dead. Perhaps in the future…

Oh, and by the way, just because I’m Catholic does not make me want to ask “How high?” if the USCCB says, “Jump!”

As for Bush, well…he’s just a cement-head. And yes, I did vote for him 😊

God Bless,
Jeff

Then people play the racist card like that, I don’t bother with them – unless they are within arm’s reach of me.😛

As a citizen of a mid-west town that has a meat packing plant… I can’t tell you how true this is… US citizens are lining up for these jobs but the plant hired sixty-some odd illegals for the jobs… and they are good paying jobs too!!!

Time for my (in)famous three questions again:
  1. Is it morally permissible to hire an illegal alien?
  2. If I hire an illegal alien, is it morally permissible to give him any less pay and benefits than I would have to give an American citizen to get him to take the job?
  3. And if I am offering suffient pay and benefits top get an American citizen to take the job, is it morally permissible to hire the illegal alien and not the American citizen?

this is good news!!!

there is hope for our great nation. the reason bush and his cronies support illegal immigration is because it’s good for the short term economy. in our age of globalization and outsourcing, cheap labor provides more profit for big buisness and small alike.

why hire a native citizen when a illegal immigrant will do it well for a quarter of the price? why keep jobs in america when you can send them to china for much much cheaper? plus the liberals see in the ignorant masses potential voters. it’s a viscous cycle driven by power and greed.

these self serving silver-spooner politicians and international globalists will destroy the middle class and the united states if left to their own accord. don’t buy into the “trickle down” theory. the rich get richer usually at the middle class’s expense.

It really is hard to understand all the machinations that go on in Washington. I thought the vote on Tuesday to cut off debate was the key vote, then last night I heard they were going to vote again today. Given that the cloture vote on Tuesday was successful I have to say I am more than a little gratified that today’s cloture vote failed.

What is noteworthy is that 18 senators changed position from yes to no between Tuesday and today; not a single one went the other way. I read in the news that the volume of calls was so high it crashed the system. I know I had a hard time getting through but I think this shows that if enough noise is made by their constituents (some of) our politicians will take notice.

Everything about this bill smelled starting with the way it was crafted in secret without any hearings and then crammed through with limited ammendments. This was basically a “trust us” bill presented by one of the least trustworthy organizations in the country. That the USCCB supported this effort is just another indication that as political players they are still lost in the wilderness and confirms the saying that if you lie down with dogs you get up with fleas.

The bill recieved more Democrat votes than Republican. Harry Reid and Ted Kennedy voted for it-are they Bush Cronies?

If you will notice, people play the race card when they are loosing the discussion and are using inaccuract facts that cannot be proved to be correct. Old motto: if you can’t win an argument, call names.

And had all the promises made in 1986 when amnesty was granted been kept, people out in the country would have looked more favorably on the bill. Many of us do not trust those folks in Washington who come home and say one thing and then go back to Washington and do another. It worked when Albert Gore, Sr. was in the Congress. But now we have all kinds of communications opportunities and they can no longer do as they please and not bother to respond to the wishes of their constituents.

Ask our gov’t and big corporations! Are employers/corporations obliged to be “moral”??? In general, I believe you are doing the “blaming the victim” act here, sir.
