Good parishes in Orange County, Calif?

And what if anything does the elevation of the new aux bishop portend for those attached to more traditional forms of worship?

And am I posting this in the right place? I did not see a category for “local references” posts.
 
Dear CRM: I belong to Holy Family Cathedral in the OC - very big, very active. I have also heard marvelous things about Santa Clara de Asis in Yorba Linda - very “Spirit filled”. St. Joseph in Santa Ana is very diverse and deeply “homey”. What is it you seek in a parish?
 
If you’re looking for a more traditional parish, the cathedral isn’t it.

Go to St. John the Baptist in Costa Mesa, under the pastoral care of the Norbertine Fathers. All the Sunday Masses use the organ and there is one Latin Mass at 12:30 PM.

Other parishes I recommend are:

St. Mary’s (Fullerton)
St. Vincent de Paul (Huntington Beach)
San Juan Capistrano Mission Basilica (San Juan Capistrano)
St. Peter Chanel (border of Los Angeles County)
St. Mary’s by the Sea (Huntington Beach…super traditional)
St. Thomas More (Irvine…Latin Mass once a month)
St. Cecilia (Tustin…starting a Latin Mass soon)

If you want to avoid a “LifeTeen” and/or contemporary Mass, don’t attend a 5 PM Sunday Mass in the diocese. The exceptions to this are St. John the Baptist and St. Mary’s by the Sea.

I don’t know the parish (a little far away for me) but I am familiar with the Norbertines. They provide their good offices to help train other clergy to offer the EF, so I’m quite sure their parochial activities are orthodox, even in the OF. One of the few “old Orders” that seems to have held fast. (And I love their habit :))

JPUSC doesn’t look in, so… There are about 5 Latin Masses in this diocese.
  • St John the Baptist Weekly and probably some Holy Days
  • St Mary by the Sea Weekly
  • St. Thomas More Monthly
  • Mission San Juan Capistrano Weekly, Holy Days, 1st Friday
  • Pope John Paul II Center Weekly
I found from various sources that all but St. Thomas Moore was Tridentine. I was actually unable to confirm that one, just that there was a Mass there in Latin now and then there. Then again, I don’t regularly attend these parishes, so someone with first hand information, your comments are appreciated. Hmm, I do know that St. John the Baptist’s has public Morning, Mid-day, and Evening prayers, if that would be helpful. Actually, all but Thomas Moore have websites.
 
There is Norbertine Abbey in the area. They used to, and I think still do, offer the OF in both English and Latin. The abbot once told me that he wanted to be sure his people were fully familiar with both.

They do offer Mass in Latin and English, and had the schedule on their website the last i checked. They do love their Latin, unfortunately, the abbey is not a parish and they’re looking for a new place. They don’t have a shortage of vocations. Go visit their website, it has good music!:harp:
 
All the Latin Masses mentioned in the parishes are Tridentine Masses. St. Thomas More has the Tridentine Mass.

If you want an Ordinary Form Latin Mass, go to St. Michael’s Abbey in Silverado for the 11 AM Mass.

For a good Ordinary Form in English, St. John the Baptist would be the place to go.

Doesn’t really make a big difference wherever you end up going as most of the priests celebrating these Latin Masses in the diocese are Norbertines, haha.
 
Oh yeah, I just remembered…I think St. Pius V in Buena Park might also have the Novus Ordo Latin Mass (Sunday, 7:15 AM). Not sure if they still offer it, so you should call if you’re interested.
