Good pride versus bad pride?

I think good pride is like when you make your parents or children etc proud by accomplishing something good.
I’m less understanding of what pride in the bad sense means.

For example if I see an extreme situation for example such as a boxer “blowing hot air about themselves” I recognise this as being pride in the bad sense, but I have troubles recognising it in everyday situations that are often more nuanced.
For example,if someone says something mean,i often get hurt deeply and find it hard to let go-does that mean I have too much pride?

I think pride is a mixed up thing by our surroundings. You can say for example something you aren’t even thinking “pridefully” about on this forum and be attacked as sinfully prideful blurring the line. If you won an Olympic Gold medal sure you could be proud, but even if you weren’t, just mentioning you won one as a fact in a convo could gain you negative feedback as to pride, so it is muddled when you may sometimes receive such (name removed by moderator)ut.

Pride as it stems from and includes God is a bit different IMO and is a different thing from sinful pride. Sinful being “I am sooooo great on my own awesome” vs with God of “I am so blessed by God that I can win these medals”

In getting hurt, again varying degrees. I saw a man stew in anger because someone didn’t see him and say hi, he thought it was a matter of great insult and disrespect. But on the flip side if someone say stole your life savings and murdered your dog while raping your cat…well… I’d say a good degree of hurt is not overtly “prideful”

So if you are like mister “How dare they not say hi to me and giveth me mine most deserved respects!” Then perhaps too prideful

If someone wrongs you and you take a fairly normal-ish amout of time to process the hurt, you may just be a person with feelings.

Nah! It just means that you are sensitive and easily hurt… Me too and I keep hoping I will grow out of it but so far… 73 and counting. I have got better a dealing with things though ie taking appropriate action and not lettting folk who have hurt me see how bad it is,

Would only be pride if you were showing off and someone said so.

Pride is not recognising that God is the author of all things and what He says us true.

When someone reaches a high level of humility, negative things as well as positive things others say about them or to them has no meaning, as the persons will is aligned with God not men.

When God gives someone a gift, they are to work to perfect it for Him not feedback from people. When feedback from people cuts into this relationship with God and what he says is true, it is pride. It can lead to arrogance for the positive feedback or self loathing from the negative…both are prideful.

A parent wants to help a child recognise these unique gifts, so in the future, they can use these gifts to serve and become the person God created them to be. So they encourage externally until the child is spiritually mature. This is not pride as it is developing what God planted.

I wrote about pride some time ago in response to another poster’ question/perception of pride. I was "attacked " by another forum member who considered “self” as a theological-moral expert in all things of the Church and Canon Law as it was that person’s “hobby.”

Therefore, I won’t touch this with a 10 foot pole, but rather advise you to ask a priest or a “real” theologian.

After that little episode I made a small study of what pride is and determined that I was pretty much on spot. I also decided that everyone has an opinion on everything and the best bet is to go to a really good source, rather than just think you can get a good, solid answer from strangers here on this forum unless they come from a couple Priest here within.

As you can tell I was deeply hurt by said person and never forgot it. Peace and prayers for you.

I thought mine was decent 😦

Teeh hee 😉

Glad you are pleased with your assessment of pride. I will not argue any of your points. Just be happy and don’t let anyone tread on you. Do continue to study. Vanity, humility, poverty, and obedience are all elements of pride. It is and can be a very deep and interesting discourse as well a way of life. Peace.

I was just being cheeky bc you said there could be no good advise here 😛

Mine may be horrible LOL but I tend to agree with myself on opinions so I do like it for now 😃

Why humility is pride?

In the most simplistic way possible

Good: I’m really good in math

Bad: I’m better in math than anyone else

Why humility is pride?
Because a lack of humility is often the result of a false pride. To explain it here would take pages and no one wants to read pages and pages. Study up on the virtues and come to understand why they are all interconnected. Peace.

I didn’t say there was no good advise here. There is plenty of good and thoughtful advise to be found here. On some subjects it is best to get information from good sources such as a Priest or a Sister. There is a lot of opinions here, too, and not always 100% correct. Your perceptions are not horrible; just that I have learned there is a certain intolerance in some members here and for that reason I just wouldn’t argue about it, one way or another, but encourage the study of the virtues. Peace.🙂
