Hi everyone,

Can someone point me in the right direction of some good quality incense? I’ve bought cheap cones from Wal Mart- no good. Smells like burning sticks. I’ve gotten resin from Amazon- no good. It smelled like something dead was burning. I got resin from the Autom Catholic store online- no good. No smell and it only lasted a few minutes. I’m looking for the same nice smelling incense that gets burned at church that will last for 30 min without me messing with it. Any suggestions?

Well, there are a lot of options. If you are looking for church incense, this is also somewhat varied. Priests have a variety of preferences. I even know some which grow their own herbs and mix it themselves. I think your best option would be to get one of the resin samplers from amazon that gives you a small amount of different varieties so you can choose which you prefer.

Did the one resin which you already purchased have myrrh in it? Straight myrrh is extremely potent and not very pleasing. If you want the heavy feel to the air which myrrh gives without the pungent aroma, you may want to try sweet myrrh. It is lighter and more tolerable.

If you like the incense which they use at your Church, you could also ask your priest what he uses. Most Catholic supply stores sell varying amounts of incense as some parishes use it sparingly while others use it all the time. You may be able to get a half or one pound bag for a reasonable price. Just be aware, the better the incense the higher the price. Some of the hand-mixed incenses can get upwards of $30+ for 100g.

Thank you very much for the response. Yes, the one I got from Amazon has myrrh in it. Maybe that was the problem. I will see if I can find a sweet myrrh and also pay attention to the price. I’m always worried that something higher priced may not always be better. I’m a bit if a skeptic sometimes. I will check around a bit to see what I can find. Thanks again!

No problem. If you have space to grow herbs or flowers, you can actually make your own incense pretty easily if you find you have certain scents you like. It would be higher quality and a lot cheaper than buying incense online. You would just need some powdered pine or other resin (if you choose pine, which is cheaper, make sure it is rosin not resin), an old pot and metal tongs, wax paper or a silicone mat for drying, and your dried herbs. After a little bit of experimentation, you come out with something you like which is high quality and purer than almost anything you would find online.

Oh, wow! That’s really cool. Thank you!

Satya and HEM are good brands. My favourite is Satya Nag Champa. It’s got a floral scent with a touch of sweetness (like honey). Amazon has them for sale. If you want something that reminds you of church, try HEM’s Frankincense; Amazon has them for sale. Amazon.ca is the main place I get my incense from, so you’ll find some good stuff on there. 🙂

I have used Gloria before (use a charcoal):
Gloria F8 (beaded) light lavender and rose scent
Gloria PR3 (beaded) evergreen and rose
Gloria P (powdered) sandalwood and floral
I never tried to burn it for 30 minutes, but is does persist.
