Im looking for some good spiritual food for a young man (my godson) for this year’s Christmas gift. He’s intelligent, already knows his faith fairly well, and is a senior in high school. Any recommendations?

I like reading about the saints, so I would give a book about St Therese of Lisieux for its message of how we can all serve God by attending to the simple things and everyday life and a book on the life of St Pio, my favourite saint.

The Introduction to the Devout Life by St. Francis de Sales. It is specifically geared toward the sanctification of laity. It would give him a good starting point to life in College when Catholicism isn’t always immediately present like at home. You would just have to make sure you get a version from a Catholic publisher. There are some abridged Protestant editions which edit out the Catholic topics.

CS Lewis is very much admired among Catholics. His books are easy to read and filled with what I think you may be looking for.

I second the Introduction to a Devout life by Francis de Sales - it’s surprisingly relevant to today’s life for soemthing written that long ago and surprisingly accurate and detailed in what to do and what not to do. I wish I’d had it at that age… hmmm especially regarding what is a temptation and when you have consented and when not, and especially relevant is how to pick your friends and what sort of things you can do a little of for politeness sake and charity but should avoid a lot of . I agree about getting a Catholic version.

CS Lewis’ Space Trilogy, starting off with the first book, “Out of the Silent Planet”.

It has a lot of theology in it. Some of it is fairly obvious. Other elements you probably wouldn’t see immediately because they are more subtle and may require deeper analysis and cross reading wth the Bible and also a touch of Plato. It’s also a thrilling story in its own right rather than an in your face lesson.

The second book in the series, “Perelandra” then moves away from broad theological concepts and homes in onto the specifics of temptation and sin, and especially the fall of man, again without ever getting too teachery or negative, despite the seriousness of the topic.

The third book, “That Hideous Strength”, takes place back home on the earth in a sort of dystopian academic setup with scientists running out of control. It was supposeldy a major inspiration to George Owell’s 1984, but in contrst to Orewll it has a strong Christian message.

Lots of interesting strating points for discussions and further stidies throughout.

-story of a soul
-the everlasting man
-the adventures of Fr. Brown (GK Chesterton)
-the lord of the rings

CS Lewis - The Screwtape Letters. Humorous and insightful. It’s only a small book so could get another to go with it.

The Catholic Source Book by Klein is great for boys. Very well presented and lots of information (but two as you’ll probably want to keep a copy).

The YouCat? What does he like to read? You could always give him a gift certificate to his favorite bookstore. My two cents.
