What are the Church’s teachings about “good works” and how do these teachings differ from Protestant teachings? And what is the basis for the difference?

If you are in the state of grace your good works become meritorious.
Gives you a claim to a higher place in heaven. Protestants deny this. Since they view grace as just something external and not as something transforming sinners into saints.
 
I need more clarification. What are the Church’s teachings about “good works”? Do we need to do “good works” to get into heaven? Do we do “good works” to obtain grace or do we do “good works” because we are in a state of grace? How are the Catholic teachings different from the Protestant teachings about this? (I think I am finding my answers in BY FAITH ALONE? PART II By LESLIE RUMBLE, M.S.C. - This Rock Volume 4, Number 6 June 1993.

To get to heaven, we need to be Baptized, or have desired to have been Baptized, and we need to stay out of mortal sin.

Do we need good works to get to heaven- Jesus seems to say so- What you did to the least…Technically what you need is grace, meritorious good works has to be made in the state of grace, these works give you an increase in sanctifying grace.
Protestants have a lot of ideas about grace, most of them totally wrong, I think that the Calvinists believe that grace is irresistible, which it is not. Luther thought that justification is just God’s verdict from the outside, inside you are just as sinful as before.
The Church says that justification is by grace alone but that once justified, you need sanctification, ie increase of grace through good works. The Church also teaches you can lose sanctifying grace through mortal sin.

James 2:24 - We are justified by works and not by faith alone.
Protestants will usually say that if you have true faith then works will follow but that is out of context of James. Mt. 25:31, which is next weeks Gospel by the way, shows Jesus seperating us into sheep and goats according to what we have done in life. Romans 2:6-7 - God will repay everyone according to their work…eternal life to those who persevere in good work.

We are like the servants in today’s Gospel. We have to use the Talents/Grace given us to do good in the world to receive merit.🙂
