Hey guys, I just watched a quick youtube video by Jimmy Akin where he discusses Mary’s perpetual virginity. I was kinda surprised when I watched the video because he’s appealing to the apocryphal Gospel of James as the earliest source for Mary’s perpetual Virginity. It just seems strange to me that Akin has no qualms with tying a central Catholic dogma to a 2nd century false Gospel. What do you think?

it is actually not called a gospel but a proto-gospel, the Protoevangelium of James, seems to have existed earlier, and no is not part of canon of scripture, but so is true of other sources of Sacred Tradition. I am sure if you listen to the entire presentation you will find that the tradition of Mary’s perpetual virginity is based also on OT prophesy and is unbroken teaching throug Sacred Tradition from the earliest days of the Church, and does not rely on that source alone.

You may find some better more complete discussions on apologetics and scripture forum.

I know that Mary is the ark and that no man can touch her just like no man could touch the ark of the covenant in the OT. I get how sacred tradition works and that Mary’s perpetual virginity has been taught since very very early on, this just seemed a little strange to me and I wanted to hear from Catholics who are more informed than I. Thanks for the reply!
