I came across it one night a few weeks ago, on YouTube, watched it, and really enjoyed it. This Jesus was portrayed beautifully, I thought, and it was the most in-depth portrayal of Him which I believe I’ve ever seen. Has anyone else seen it?

I’ve seen it, it’s good.
It is a motion picture that has been adapted for the screen on a word-for-word basis from the American Bible Society’s Good News Bible. This three-hour epic feature film follows John’s Gospel precisely, without additions to the story from other Gospels, nor omission of complex passages. This film was created by a constituency of artists from Canada and the United Kingdom, along with academic and theological consultants from around the world. The cast was selected primarily from the Stratford Shakespeare Festival and Soulpepper Theatre Company, as well as Britain’s Royal Shakespeare Company and Royal National Theatre. The musical score, composed by Jeff Danna and created for the film, is partially based on the music of the Biblical period.
Almost all serious devout portraits of Christ I have to give a thumbs-up too, as long as it is not something that is way out of Christian thought and as long as everyone in the movie is indeed trying to make a sincere portrayal of Christ.

I’ve seen this Italian (or Spanish) black and white serial of the life of Jesus on EWTN, I think that is pretty good, all things considered.

I have seen it. I personally enjoyed it. Mostly because Jesus actually seems like a relatable human guy in the movie. If you look at all the other Jesus movies, Jesus has like no emotion and is monotone. Though a few do have him like and relatable person, such as The Passion, and Son of God. The actor in this film made Jesus seem very “energetic,” which I actually would have imagined him to be like. He gets up in peoples faces, moves around, set a nice mood, which I enjoy.

These are my two favorite parts of the movie, just by the kind of “energy” Jesus gives off. 🙂

I love the movie. In my opinion is is one of the best movies about Jesus’s life ever made, though it is restricted to the gospel of John. But I still keep Mel Gibsons, “The Passion,” number one. Even though it is only the last 12 hours of our Lord’s life, it is very touching and get’s to your very core!

God Bless! 🙂

I’d also rank the Gospel of John as one of the better Jesus films out there. Mostly because, just as you said, it manages to make the more divine Jesus of John’s gospel to be a very convincing, real human being - “Word made flesh” indeed. Not some stoic, emotionless entity who just donned a human costume.

I have another recommendation BTW: a 1964 Italian film known as Il Vangelo secondo Matteo (English: The Gospel according to St. Matthew). Pasolini was hardly the type you’d imagine to make a film about Jesus: he was homosexual, he was Marxist, he was atheist (though he did have Catholic roots), and he did make some rather shocking films before and after this one. But what makes his movie special is due to the fact he did not bring any baggage onto it; he simply read the gospel of Matthew one time and was so moved by it that he was inspired to make a film using only the gospel’s text.

To be honest, unlike Hollywood/American films, Matthew is a more gritty, ‘arty’ film so it takes some time getting used to, and it presupposes that you already know the story (unlike Gospel of John, there is no narration - the images instead suggest the context). But the Jesus of the film is notable: He is a bit aloof, but He is by no means an empty robot - on the contrary, He is very much like a revolutionary with a fire on His belly that manifests itself in His preaching (you might say He sounds a bit ‘angry’ - though the more correct description might be ‘passionate’). I’ll admit, I like this portrayal better than the overly-gentle Jesus you see in some films. At least this portrayal shows you that Jesus is serious and passionate about getting His message to the world.

Fun fact: Pasolini filmed Matthew in Matera, Italy, the same city Mel Gibson filmed The Passion of the Christ in. (He did try to film in the Holy Land, but he was disappointed with how commercialized the place had become.)

The Gospel of John is probably my favorite “Jesus” movie. My only complaint is some of the modern style dialog. In most cases, it works, but in some cases, it just really seems to stand out.
