The National Geographic Magazine recently published an article on the discovery of manuscripts relating to the Gospel of Judas although I have not been able to obtain an English translation of the manuscripts, I have discussed the discovery with various catholic priests who have intimated that this is not a gospel but in fact agnostic writings which have been uncovered.

National Geographic tv did a program on this as well. This document has NOT been uncovered. It has been known for a long long time and was declared heretical in the 300’s AD… It was not written by Judas and it is not a gospel.

I think you mean gnostic. They were heretics that believed that matter was evil and that knowledge could save you. They also are dualist and believe that ‘the God of the OT’ was evil and the higher ‘God of the NT’ could save you or something. Marcion is the most famous example I think, though they were the second heretics to appear (after Judaizers). They also were very prolific from the mid 2nd century to maybe the 4th century in writing fake ‘gospels’ that they didn’t believe the events in, but used them as teaching aids

I have seen at least one scholar claim that National Geographic mistranslated several critial passages to make their story.

Recalling National Geographic’s phony bird-dinosaur cover of a couple of years back, I tend to question their credibility. They go for entertainment; not science.

this was discussed extensively on this forum probably in the news or media forums, when it came out last year. it is not a new discovery, this gnostic writing has been known of for at least decades, it is not a gospel–which by definition is one of the four evangelistic accounts in the Christian new testament–and it is not by Judas, having been written centuries after his death. the actual work was known and debunked by Church fathers in the early centuries, the mss supposedly “exposed” by the NG article and program was discovered in the last century, hardly a newsbreaking story as they presented it. just more sensational TV glop
