Hello all. I was just wondering if anyone had a link to a site where I can read where the church denounced the Gospel of Thomas. I confess that the movie Stigmata is one of my favorites, and the Gospel is mentioned there.

Also, if anyone knows anything about it…post here for me. Thanks!

The denunciation, like the inferences drawn from it, is a fictitious detail in the story, which is present for the sake of the plot.

In actuality, the text referred to was discovered only in 1945, and is one of a large number of texts not referred to, (let alone denounced or accepted) by ancient Christian writers.

There are two Thomas-texts:
  1. The “Infancy Gospel of Thomas the Israelite Philosopher”, which claims to relate some incidents from the childhood of Jesus
  2. Our text, which is a series of 114 sayings ascribed to Jesus. It is not really a gospel at all in its form. It’s part of a cache of documents discovered in 1945 at Nag Hammadi in Egypt. ##

I don’t know if this is the same work or something different but Eusebius, writing about A.D. 312, refers to a Gospel of Thomas which he says was not accepted by the Church in his History of the Church, book 3, chapter 25.

You liked that movie?
I found it kind of entertaining…yes. Now, make no mistake, I entered it from a fiction standpoint. But, that is my gift, the ability to separate fact from fiction…and thus enjoy both.
