So I’ve talked to a few teachers, of which are catholic, about the gospel of thomas. Some have said it’s scripture the others feel they aren’t.
So is it scipture or no?

Of course it is not scripture. Its not in the Bible.
Scripture is the Bible.

my bible is different then those of the catholics. So it is indeed apocryphal?

Are you Protestant? No Christian Bible I am aware of has the Gospel of Thomas. It has always been considered apocryphal.

So let me get this strait… JUST CHECKING HERE.

CATHOLOSISM DOES NOT SEE THE GOSPEL OF THOMAS AS SCIPTURE…NOT ONE? NOT EVEN ONE? just making sure because I’ve been told yes and no by different catholics.

No, it is not scripture. It is a fictious document produced in the 2nd century by a group called the Gnostics.

These people claimed to have the “secret knowledge” of salvation passed on only to them by Jesus. That’s what Gnosis is - secret knowledge. They also said that the God of the Old Testament was evil and the God of the New Testament was good. Therefore in order for one to be good, you had to get rid of the body since the body, the flesh, was evil. They were proponents of suicide along with many other strange and crazy ideas. They even went so far as to promote the idea that Jesus had to die, not to fulfill prophecy/do the will of God but because he was not divine in the flesh because the flesh is evil. He only became divine after his body died and his “good spirit” was released. (Someone correct me or expound if I’m wrong on this). Gnostic writings were condemned, most profoundly, by St. Iraneaus in his writing Against Heresies around 180 AD.

These documents have long been known by the church and easily accessible online for anyone’s reading. The Church has not tried to cover up their existence, which is what some groups are claiming now and it in no way “undermines or shakes Christianity to its core.” It only served to gives us a better idea of what the Gnostics actually believed.

There are several councils of Catholic bishops in history that specifically say that it is not scripture. The Councils of Florence and Trent are just a couple. THe Gospel of Thomas is not scripture.

Masonic Jew or Messianic Jew? just curious 🙂

One thing you have to realize about Catholics – not all accept the Church’s teachings. Never in the history of the Church did the Magisterium (teaching authority) of the Church accept the Gospel of Thomas as Scripture. It is a Gnostic “Gospel,” very antithetical to Christian belief. Now lately there are dissident Catholics who are embracing, as a result of recent hype of Gnostic and New Age beliefs, certain Gnostic “gospels” that were never in the Catholic (or any canon) of Scripture (there’s one of these Catholics in my parish unfortunately).

These gnostic texts are what the National Enquirer and The DaVinci Code is to us today.

Our generation doesn’t have the monopoly on BS on paper.

The Catholic Church doesn’t work that way. What individuals may or may not believe doesn’t amount to an endorsement by the Church.

The Church does not consider the Gospel of Thomas to be sacred and inspired scripture. In fact, if you read the Gospel of Thomas, you see that whatever its origin, it has been heavily edited and altered to present a Gnostic view. The Church condems Gnosticism as a heresy.

Many who were quick to embrace the Gospel of Thomas, after reading Elaine Pagel’s book on it, are even faster to discard it, when they learn who the Gnostics were and what they believed in.

That’s one of my patented elephant traps. Get anti-Catholics into discussions and back them into claiming to be Gnostics, Arians, etc.

Then show them what those heretics actually taught.http://forums.catholic-questions.org/images/icons/icon10.gif

Perhaps you have spoken with Catholics who equate scripture with writings. All of those ancient books are of course writings or scripture in the general sense, but they are not “Sacred Scripture” which would be the writings accepted as in the canon of the Bible. Even the word bible can be misconstrued if used out of context, as one can go on line and check you will find there are bibles devoted to guns, hunting, fishing, etc.; they being collections of short books on the topic.

The Gospel of Thomas is a Gnostic document written about 150 AD

The Gnostics were a mixture of Persian dualism and Eastern mysticism for more info see: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gnosticism

They were a major foe of the early Church with their attempt to mix Christianity with their own beliefs. They claimed the Apostles did not teach all that Jesus preached and that they kept hidden higher knowledge, which only a select few were aloud to know

The Gospel of Thomas is online if you search with Google your are sure to find it.

It’s why many Muslims believe the Gnostic writings and not the New Testament. It cancels out Bible believing Christians, as being the Christians the Koran tells them not to harm.
