You are so right, japhy. And another thing I might add is that departure from the norms is never for the good of the people. Whatever happened to the fact that the faithful deserved to have the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass (and liturgies like Good Friday) celebrated in the manner the Church prescribes? That is for the good of the people.He’s free within the realm of choices given to him. He’s not allowed to go outside the regulations justly imposed on him by his bishop, conference of bishops, the CDWDS, or the Pope.

See GIRM nn. 38-41; here’s an excerpt:In the rubrics and in the norms that follow, words such as “say” and “proclaim” are to be understood of both singing and reciting, according to the principles just stated above. … In the choosing of the parts actually to be sung, however, preference should be given to those that are of greater importance and especially to those to be sung by the priest or the deacon or the lector, with the people responding, or by the priest and people together.
Jim, again, you are only looking at horizontal issues, rather than vertical. The rubrics and norms are there for a reason. No one has the authority to deviate from these things, no one, whether it is a a bishop, priest, religious or lay person. While there is some leeway given to the bishop, it is limited and it is not wholesale.Actually the sister is correct. Priest are given the authority to make such decisions, from their Bishop.
Being that you’ve gone over the head of your pastor, and shown that you don’t trust his knowledge, compassion or agenda, what will you do, should have to go to him and as for him to come to visit a loved one who is ill, or to Baptize a child? After all, you don’t trust him saying the Mass, why would you trust him on other issues?
I see a lot of belly-aching in here, about parish priest who according to many opinionated folks in this forum, have committed abuse. However, being none of us know the communication that goes on between the Bishop and the priest, no one can actually say there is abuse. Just citing the GIRM( which is the general rule, not the absolute authority over the Bishop), doesn’t make the alleged abuse fact.
We called to have love and compassion for people, this includes your poor priest, who’s only doing his best to serve you and your fellow parishioners.
