I’m a cradle Catholic, and I’m very immersed in my faith, but I once heard someone say that some Catholic churches, during the Gospel procession, process into the midst of the congregation and preach the Gospel from there. This confuses me because I’ve never been to a single church that’s done this. I do know that the Episcopal Church does this, and other Protestant religions as well, but is this allowed in the Catholic Church? Or was it something that was allowed in the past? I’ve looked into it and I’ve only found a bunch of Protestant answers.

In short: Must the Gospel always be read at the Ambo/Pulpit or is the Deacon/Priest allowed to proclaim it in the midst of the assembly? Catholicly speaking…

General Instruction of the Roman Missal, No. 58
In the celebration of the Mass with the people, the readings are always read from the ambo.

So, no. this should not be done.

In the Latin rite, this is a no-no. But, I’ve been to Anglican Ordinariate Masses where this was the case and presumably normal for that rite. So it really depends.

Read - has to be from the ambo.
Preach - I have seen our Bishop done it from the rostrum. If he read (if he is alone), he would go to the ambo, and then go back to the rostrum to preach.

I just can’t find the right word for it. Lol. It is from the Bishop’s chair, probably you get the picture.

In the age of microphones and loudspeakers, a preacher is free to stand just about wherever he likes, as long as he’s not hidden from view. He no longer needs a pulpit fitted with a sounding board. But the readings are invariably from the ambo (lectern). I don’t think I’ve ever seen that done anywhere else.

Are they confusing this with the homily? I’ve never heard or seen about this. I would think it would be a no-no to move about while reading the gospel.

Not walk around while preaching the Gospel. The Deacon/Priest would, apparently, process half way up the center aisle or to the bottom of the sanctuary steps holding the book of Gospels with the thurifer, lucifers, and book bearer. Then he would have the book bearer hold the book of Gospels, he would incense the book, then would read the Gospel whilst standing in the middle or at the front of the aisle. This is how I heard that it was done. The guy said it was symbolic because “The WORD became flesh and lived AMONG US.” I hope that clears some things up.

Rosturm?

I must confess I’ve never seen this term…
When I read it, I thought of the old “preaching pulpits” that were common in larger churches before microphones were practical for churches. Many historic churches still have them.

Not an Andy Gibb fan, I wager. (Ten points to the person who identifies the song with this as a lyric)
