Gospels vs. Letters

The Gospels tell us the life and ministry of Jesus, the Epistles give us clear teachings on what this life and ministry means to us as Christians.

I have no position on whether one form of writing or another holds “more weight” as we accept them all as Canon Scripture teaching us the true Gospel of Christ. I think it is right that we stand in reverence when the Gospel is read, as it contains the words of Jesus.

To me, I never really understood Christianity until I dove deep into the Epistles. Why? Well, I think it is because I am a Gentile, Paul’s audience. To this effect, the Epistles teach clearly how the wild branches of Gentile communities can be grafted unto the root stock of the faith of Abraham and why despite our faith and worship of the One God of Israel, we are not bound by the Law of Moses.

Personally, I wish we had longer readings from the Epistles, the 2nd readings at Mass are woefully short and too often out of context to really understand the theological points being made. I also like homilies that extend beyond just showing how the Gospel reading applies to today’s world. Not that such messages aren’t important, but when you exclude the Epistles from the pulpit, you end up with Catholics that can’t articulate why the Messiah of the Jews is also the savior of all the world. Just my 2 cents.
